Macgregor was the one who should have gotten away scot free. Not the young couple. They did nothing to earn my sympathy. Them getting away in the end and Macgregor going back to prison almost ruined the film for me.
There is no "off" position on the genius switch.

shareYes the movie would have been better without the romance plot dragging it down, Macgregor was actually charismatic and likable, where the kid and his girlfried were both kind of whiny,irritating, and bland.
I think I would have liked the movie A LOT more if it were just man vs. man, making the kid obsessed with having a relationship with this unexceptional woman at any cost because he had a sexual attraction for her didn't make me like him.
The only thing I liked about the "getaway" was that she appeared to be the one putting it together rather than the "chess genius," which was consistent with the rest of the movie, where he did a magnificent job of doing just about anything he was told to do by others.🐭
