ending was dumb!

Ewans character should of gotten away on the yacht, and the other two got away too.

reply

He couldn't get away on the yacht: He didn't have his gold.

He had to wait for JR and Tasha to tell him where it was, and he got sloppy.

he didnt need the gold, would be better to have no prize than sit in jail for 25 years ... I mean the writer should of written it as jr and tasha trick him, and ewan just sails off with no money..

reply

He didn't need the gold?

His whole raison d'etre was the gold!! That's why he betrays JR at the end!

He wasn't going anywhere without that gold, which he knew that JR would turn over, because (unlike him) JR was...um...honest. Heh.

I had same thought about the ending, but your explanation is very convincing like comparing to primitives. One is rough & tough, and other one is smart & soft. But still going back to jail was too much to take for me.

Here is why:
In American movies it will be well commercialised so this kind of ending including using bad words, dark comedies, car chase and shooting all are fun. But this movie gave kind of realistic appeal so back to the cage while we're watching it seriously means hard to take-in as a movie lover, but critic might be loving it.

In the end it was a better ending I guess for all of us who got different tastes coz he also learnt a lesson despite twist in the tale which confirmed with his smile before the credit roll.

I thought it was a bit much, too, really. But there are only a few ways something like that can end.

He could go to jail. He could get killed. He could get away with it.

They're all problematic.

Hitch would've sent them all to jail.

Giving unexpected is what writer should do and it was an unexpected end twist (of course after the main twist) only at a first glance, but if we think what are all the probables instead going back to prison, the current one was way better.

I don't want, but if a sequel is planned, it will be a good start to repeat it again. One side Sam's men would try to avenge him (in prison) and in other side JR could give a hand to rescue from the outside.

well Jr is also a thief , wanted by the cops, escaped from jail! so he is on the run now!

Ewans character was very smart, collective, changing houses in the beginning because no good escapes routes from the house, playing chess, calculating moves, street smart, business man, planner etc..
a man like this is on a boat! he could of just said, OK, screw it, Im off. the money is gone anyway
and he could of scored another time.

sounds like Deniros character in HEAT, he was free, had the money, but he went back to kill that guy when he didnt have too, I guess even the smartest criminals have voices in their heads which tell them to do things which make no sense.

The ending was hardly dumb. Son of a Gun was a very nice surprise for movies for 2014.

reply

I'm glad he didn't die, which is how these things always end, and as notorious as he was, that he'd be recognised and caught immediately makes sense.

Still, I know what you mean. Anyone deserving the gold and the happy ending was him. Being smart is one thing, but to me what Jr did was theft, more or less. And yes, Ewan was a thief too, but still the whole thing was his masterplan. Person with the master plan deserves the money. Or at least not be in jail, not the ragtag tag along and the pregnant stripper spy

i didn't understand how did the police found him?
i saw he looked at the magazine and realize something and then got out with hands in the air,i didn;t understand what he realized?

reply

The magazine he looked at had an article about him in it. When he came into the laundry, there was a woman reading it, who recognized him and (presumably) called the police.

reply

The movie was based on a real life Australian bank robber Brenden Abbott aka The Postcard Bandit. He escaped prison a number of times and was last captured in a Laundromat where he surrendered to police just as in the film's ending.

reply

What would JR do with bricks of gold anyway? There is no way he knows how to sell that much gold without getting caught. Plus, I dont like how Ewan's charactor suddenly became a different charactor at the end and let JR go.
Wouldnt it have been smarter for JR to just take half the gold and dont tell him?

reply

They didn't risk sending the message that you can rob and kill, and get away with it.
Funny part is the guy looks 40, he will do the original 20 behind bars, plus whatever for the escape, plus at least 20 for the heist, hostage taking, and the killings. He won't ever get to see that good.
