Mariel has a lot more work to do on herself. SPOILERS!!

I love the archival footage. Loved Margot and her trying to make her own documentary. The slow, unseen developments that take you by storm. This film was wonderful and exciting and sad and then it made me fear for Mariel. She has not escaped the family at all. She has learned to do it better. We think her boyfriend is so nice....... but he isn't really. The scene of him speeding at 130 miles an hour and then screaming at her and then still making her climb that rock with her barely getting up it. She gave in to him, completely gave in to him. She tried to please him. This will be her downfall. This will be how she dies. She will fall off something and it will seem to be an accident. But it won't be.

I completely agree...Mariel has lots more work to do on herself. I also wonder if Bobby is crazy about her or about her trust fund?

I fear for her, too. I think she's more affected by her genes than she thinks she is, in regard to her mental health.

She talked about having food issues in the past. I think she still does. The difference is now, she doesn't go on popcorn or coffee diets. Now the issue is raw & organic food. Her newest diet is also very rigid & limited.

Mariel reminded me very much of a relative of mine. She "used to have food issues", too - but she now says she no longer does. She was anorexic, then became bulimic. Finally, she "overcame" all her food issues by becoming a vegetarian. She is the most obnoxious kind, obsessed with meat being unhealthy for everyone & believes it's her right & responsibility to lecture & judge anyone & everyone who ate meat or fish. Now she has advanced to being a vegan.

Within a few months of turning vegan, she "discovered" she had "multiple allergies & sensitivities". She said her system is so "delicate", she cannot drink as much as a sip of anything containing caffeine, without becoming completely unstrung for at least 24 hours. Of course, caffeine should now be off-limits to the rest of the world, as well.

Next, she "learned" all medications, even aspirin, did everyone more harm than good. She claims she won't ever get ill and need medications because she "eats properly now". I hope she doesn't get very sick because she has vowed she will not take any "drugs", under any circumstances. She claims everyone would be better off not using "drugs" of any kind & that says doctors are irresponsible in prescribing drugs, because all illnesses can - and should be - cured by eating a "proper diet."

I wish Mariel luck because from what I saw, she's on the road to becoming like the person I described above, with regard to food.

I think she'll also need luck in her relationship with Bobby. I hope for her sake, he's not just there, enjoying having access to Hemingway funds for his fitness/nutrition business & all his activities.

I just watched this and the part where her boyfriend says, "For one minute, no talking like a girl.... no girl talk... man up and let's go up the canyon."
So, apparently, only MEN can rock climb and are tough? Apparently, being frustrated and wanting to express it is too girly, right Bob?

I lost complete respect for him the minute he used that phrase when talking to her. She tried to stand up for herself and he accused her of "making up stories". What an arrogant ass! Clearly, he has some kind of strong hold on her and she cannot see what a douche he is. "Let's just do whatever you want, Bob.", she said.

It is one thing to challenge your partner in a positive way to bring out their courage, but that is not what he was doing. He was demeaning and selfish. I was going to buy the DVD and the books Mariel & Bob wrote together. Not now!

Gosh. Your relative sounds like a relative of mine.

My relative went from anorexia to raw food to vegan to 'almost everything is an allergy' and now pseudo-religious multi-day fasts that have taken her body (and her mind) to the brink of insanity.

Not to mention the intolerance toward, and snubbing of, other folks who don't want to walk down the same path as her.

I fear for her...healthwise physically & emotionally.

She just keeps trying to control her body, her environment, and by extension those around her...but now she thinks she is doing so 'healthily' when in fact it's the same old story, just with a new prop -- one fad after another -- and she is increasingly isolating herself from everyone else.

Denise, I'd say we must be related (meaning we must be talking about the very same relative) but I've heard this extreme intolerance of others & relentless lecturing & attempting to control those who make different food choices are common attitudes & behaviors from people who have mental health issues relating to food - specifically vegetarians/vegans/organic only folks.

You have my sympathy. This one has created problems in my family because she expects everyone to serve nothing that is not vegan/organic when she is in attendance. She is so unreasonable & my brother is so in love with her that most of my family just gives in, to keep peace. Not me! I have stopped entertaining my family as a group because of her demands (and lectures if/when they are not met).

The boyfriend is such a bag of douche. But what a cliché, the pretty girl goes for the a-hole once again. I must say that Mariel looks amazing for her age. And to the others in here posting about they're vegan family members, why does it seem most of these people are such a-holes?

reply

Don't want to generalize but maybe it takes a certain type of person to willingly subjugate themselves to such a strict, rigid, uncompromising diet/lifestyle. I don't think easy going, carefree, "live and let live" types would be tempted in anyway. It's too high maintenance.

If someone forced me to be a vegan, I'll become an as----- from being frustrated and angry and hungry all the time. And maybe convincing others is their way of convincing themselves. Because in my opinion, forcing yourself into a raw only, vegan, microbiotic, diet is not living. Eating is one of the pleasures in life. Just eat everything in moderation.

And maybe convincing others is their way of convincing themselves.

You bring up an interesting point. All too often I encounter people in real life and online that just cannot fathom someone not agreeing with every opinion they have or living the lifestyle they have chosen for themselves. I can see sharing whatever you're into if the other person takes an interest, but that's rarely the case. It's always hostility which I think it actually insecurity about whatever they're supposedly so passionate about. This kind of thing happens a lot with vegans and recent religious converts (and no, I'm not downing all religion).

As for Mariel, I think she, like all of us, is a work in progress. She has more self awareness than most of her family members and actually faces and deals with her feelings. It could not have been easy for her to admit that her true feelings about Margaux. She's clearly working hard to break the cycle and I think she's rather well adjusted. She also seems like a good mom.

I have no idea if she's still with the boyfriend but I do think it a bit unfair to judge him entirely for a one off episode. If you've ever been on a trip with a significant other, you know those can either break or make a couple. Admittedly, I did get a bit of a misogynistic jerk vibe from him from the get go. Like when they were talking about their company at some event and he made a rather humorless joke about how men have the will but women get their way (or words to that effect). Perhaps he was stunting for the camera but he did come off rather annoying.

reply

I agree. You can't judge someone based on one or two incidents. I shudder to think how I would come across when caught angry or upset. However, I do get a bad vibe from him. He puts her down in subtle and not so subtle ways throughout the documentary that ping my jerk radar. But of course I could be wrong.

Omg, vegan fascists are so charmless. It makes me want to eat filet mignon in their honor!

Yep. Sounds like the same story!

Reinforcing this sickness -- and it *is* a sickness and/or a manifestation of an illness (as you mention) -- is not good IMHO (meaning not good to 'give in' to unreasonable demands).

If my relative continues to not seek help, but wants to bring her own meals or cook them up herself when we are all together, that's fine, so long as she leaves others to eat in peace.

Unfortunately, she can't...

Totally agree with everyone about Bob. What a jerk.

Dear Mariel,
Please accept this observation from an outsider who can see this objectively. Bobby is a jackass. So utterly charmless. (This opinion was formulated before the outing with the flat tire). You are like a precious gemstone and he's a pompous blow-hard. He is not in the same league with you, and believe me - he knows it! It would be "crazy" to keep this big nothing in your life.

I just watched this Doc. Their is so much to say regarding Mental Health in this country, but was she the right person to be addressing this HUGE issue we face? The relationship with her partner was abusive. He was abusive! That affects your mental health. I wish her the best.

I agree Bobby came off as jerk, but one episode of jerkness may not be enough to make a a flat-out determination about him.

Mariel came off to me as someone who really has taken a good tack in life. She is like the child of an alcoholic who decided never to drink. She eschewa the crazy things her family liked and that were among the things that made them crazy.

I can see how she had food issues but possibly she is not the type identified by commenters here who imposes those codes on others. I think her having spent 24 years in her first marriage with an ex who apparently still likes her enough to visit shows she can be stable in a relationship.

Since she has started a business with Bobby and, as also mentioned here, co-authored projects with him, I can see how that might be a relationship she is not necessarily going to throw over overnight. I was interested to see the spat included in the film which means something ... Mariel reminding Bobby of it, Bobby reminding himself of it. I even thought maybe it had broken them up as he did not appear in the film again.

One thing that struck me, though, is that everyone in the family does seem to have trouble finding the right mate. Papa Hemingway, for instance, was married something like four times. Possibly their problems with mates occur because they keep allowing themselves to be swayed by looks. If they could look for soul-mates, if they could develop their souls to begin with, which I think many do -- e.g., Mariel, perhaps they would all have more success in marriage.

reply

I'm not sure Mariel is so swayed by looks. Her first husband wasn't very attractive, nor is Bobby. I mean, given how beautiful Mariel is, I'm certain she could find a really attractive man if she wanted to. So, I don't think this is her issue (though it might have been an issue for some of her other family members?).

Mariel seems very centered compared to her family members, though I do agree with the others here who express concern about her food issues. I think she subconsciously uses it as a way of controlling her environment, because her environment may otherwise seem so out of control - her family certainly was/is.

The fact that Mariel doesn't drink or do drugs, and the fact that she puts so much effort into knowing herself and into being healthy, puts her miles ahead of the rest of her family, though she clearly still has work to do. Don't we all?

I agree with everyone that Bobby is an ass. If I'd been in the situation with the broken down cars, I'd tell him to take a hike (without me!). :)
