Stanley Kubrick in a movie about Errol Flynn?

Okay, I don't know much about either one of these two in terms of their actual lives (except where they come from - England and Australia) but did Stanley Kubrick EVER meet with Errol Flynn? Just curious.

As someone who lives in Australia I had to palm myself in the face so hard I actually drew blood.

The responses to the guy that said Tasmania is a country is *beep* hilarious.

"I have always valued my lifelessness."

"Tasmanian not Australian" is like saying "Alaskan/Hawaiian not American"

Flynn wanted Kubrick to cast Aadland as Lolita and wanted to be in the film as well.

but isnt kubrick american, not british?

reply

Because he made so many of his movies in the UK, I thought he was from there. It was an honest mistake and not really that big a deal.

It's a good question, don't feel bad for asking it. I think this story has been around for a long time-- that Kubrick and Flynn might have met about making a film of "Lolita." I'm really not convinced on this one, though, as Flynn died in 1959, and "Lolita" came out in 1962. Kubrick was very busy making "Spartacus" at about the time Flynn died, and while I guess it's possible they met on such a project, I kind of wonder if this is an urban myth, based on Flynn's relationship with teenaged Beverly Aadland during the last two years of his life.

I haven't read that much about Kubrick, and maybe he was thinking about "Lolita" while Flynn was still alive, but I've always assumed he came to the "Lolita" project after "Spartacus" was finished. Who knows, maybe he had wanted to film "Lolita" for a long time, but I've never read anywhere that he had considered it while Flynn was living. And Flynn was such a wreck at that time, from his years of substance abuse, that I don't think he could have handled such an assignment. I kind of think this whole story became popular years after Flynn died, and after "Lolita" came out. People who remembered Flynn's romance with Aadland would have made obvious associations with the movie characters, and a story might have grown out of this. But I don't know, either, and I guess it's possible. I've just never seen any evidence that they met, or that Kubrick was interested in Flynn or the story, while Flynn was alive. I'm open minded, though, and if there's evidence, I guess it could have happened.

According to Elstree Studios the filming of Lolita started in Νον 1960. So, the pre-production stage had to start even earlier, possibly even breaking into late 1959.

Stanley Kubrick was considering Flynn as the Main lead in Lolita, however he was in no way interested in Aadland, and KUBRICK WAS A DICTATOR OF A DIRECTOR, a dam good one too, arguably the best. Flynn however was so in love he made it clear it was a two part hire, you cast him so she must be cast too. Kubrick very much wanted Joey Heatherton to play Lolita but her father did not let her, in fact Im sure a lot of fathers of actresses forbade their daughters to audition for Lolita. Eventually the role went to Sue Lyon mainly due to her figure ( breasts- not kidding), and meanwhile Aadland was not even in the top choices.

In the trailer for The last Robin Hood , during the Kubrick part you can see the script to Lolita on the Table. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise that Flynn was not cast as he died during production or maybe post.

Kubrick was from the Bronx but moved to England and stayed, * probably why the interesting actor choice to play him. If it was Kubrick of twenty years later from the time period of this film, another choice would have been no question.

**As for the thread about Tasmanian/ Australian pLEASE check out

When someone says something inaccurate (Kubrick was an odd AMERICAN who actually permanently relocated to England), it is possible to correct them without being a dick about it. And I've kind of lost interest on whether or not Tasmania is the same as Australia. Maybe it's kind of like Texans, not always wanting to be Americans?

I am curious how factual the meeting between the Kubrick and Flynn was. Where did the information come from? Not from the reclusive Kubrick surely, who died in 1999. Also, if Kubrick thought Adland was too old and not talented enough, Joey Heatherton was the same age and not very talented either. (I have heard Kubrick was interested in Tuesday Weld or Hayley Mills for "Lolita", but they both turned the role down).

I also don't know that Flynn would have really wanted to play "Humbert Humbert" given the reputation he already had and his current illicit relationship with Beverly Adland. Some of the guys that get in trouble with underage teenage girls are ephebophiles who PREFER girls that age, but some are just generally horny and will play ball with anyone if there's grass on the field. Errol Flynn always struck me more as the latter.
