Question about the eye implant segment.

I know that this ain't the type of movie that tied up loose ends for you, however...I'm still trying to figure out why the girl screwing the guy with the eye implant would make the visions go away. Any theories?

Oh, goodbye mama. I'll never do dishes again.

I had a different take on that: she was jumping his bones expressly to flip the bird at her onlooking "uncle," hence her fate at the bottom of the Jacuzzi; it never had to do with helping him out -- though that whole short seemed like a big Unreliable Narrator experiment from Chris Nolan's student days. Possibly he was hallucinating/fantasizing the "real" parts of it too

That's interesting, that didn't occur to me. Except, if that was the case, it was obviously something that she had done before to get back at her uncle (since she said she knew how to get rid of the visions). Why would doing it this particular time result in her getting killed? You know, as I type this its occurring to me that this ain't the smartest movie ever...why do I care? Nevermind :) Fun times.

Someone else here thought she was only feigning her death (or failed in the attempt) as furtherance of her weird fetishes. It'd make for a pretty strange episode of CSI anyway

From what I understood, taking your mind off of the "ghosts" made them go away even if only for a bit. The girl says something like "if you acknowledge them, they can hurt you more, and touch you" so I suppose that explains why she tracked down this random guy she met just to have sex...
I really liked this segment, especially having the eye-implant filming which I thought was a clever take on found footage, but I had a lot of questions.

I assumed her uncle abused her when she was younger and wanted her for himself so seeing her have sex with another guy would drive him away. Although I guess you could argue that it would only serve to provoke him.

Exactly.

Just a quick question, could the guy not just close his new eye when he went to the loo?

reply

I'd have bought an eyepatch for times like that. However the doctor did imply that he'd be blind in his biological eye until he adjusted to the new one.

My theory is that all he saw were ghosts, even the girl. She looks at him strangely at the start, not because of his eyes, but because she realizes he can see her.

The only "real" person is the guy that kills him at the end. Although that also may be a ghost. Not sure of motivations or why they would haunt him though. Maybe he caused their deaths somehow in the "accident"?
