Yes. That was completely unnecessary and the most disturbing part

There's something wrong with Esther.

There is nothing wrong with killing off animals in movies. It was sad but at least if people were saddened by it maybe it will make them think about what we do to animals in real life as humans. Fight for animal rights more and make the killing of animals for food more humane than it is at times now.

The problem is that it's an overused plot device to try and tug at the viewer's heartstrings, and it's been used in every single horror/suspense movie that features a domesticated animal.

Agreed. It's a cheap, unnecessary tactic and does nothing to make the movie 'scarier'.

I agree (I presume you mean not killing them for real ;) )

It's much worse when children are killed on screen, especially babies. I hate that with a passion and that horrible movie "under the skin" is the worst of all and the lowest of the low.
As for animals dying on screen it's certainly not nice.

It made me sad! I hugged my pup for a good five minutes after I saw that

The dog was the least annoying character in that whole story, too. All the humans were intolerable. So vulgar and annoying.
