No, you're not alone. I like the film and hate the boy. I enjoyed the scene in which he is beaten.

Frankly I find the comments here just as disturbing as I find Ted's behavior in the movie.
When I first envisioned this movie I thought this kid was something evil an possessed like a "Damien" from the Omen. This is quite different.
This boy is the result of bad environment, lack of parenting and lack of love, and the presence of positive reinforcement for some of his behavior (paying him for roadkill) Why would someone do that?
No real supervision and no outlet for pent up frustrations and no real supervision much of the time.
He was crying out with "negative attention" acts. He felt unloved and unwanted and put a lot of hope in an absent mother who he assumed might be a better parent to him; or at least have an attempt to find out.
I just wanted to "reach out" to him and try to make things better for him but of course that would no be possible anyway.
The boy needed professional help and so did the father.
This is a case where I have real difficulty trying to lay the blame on the boy. Particularly after he was seriously beaten by the teenagers, he got NO help from his father who was drunk and abusive himself, and the boy took out all of his frustration in a way that he felt was a "payback" for the pain that was caused to him.
I feel he needed serious counseling and a different and more structured environment.
I dont think he was beyond hope, but after his actions, He needed to be in and environment where he was counseled and supervised and given positive reinforcements for improvements in his behavior.
Without these thinks he was indeed on a dangerous path.
I didnt like to see the loss of the teen lives but they too were seriously out of control and engaging in seriously risky behavior and the idea of nearly killing a small boy was pretty drastic in itself. The father had NO business allowing this to go on on his property and in real life situations he could be liable for allowing this.
