In "The Dead Hand" why does the brother confess

to killing his sister, when he didn't do it. How did he know she got pushed down the stairs, why would he say he did it when he knows it was a lie.

He doesn't know whether he killed her or not, he was too high to remember. His (adopted) father convinced him he had done it and urged him to do something good with his life for once and confess. The kid truly believed he had killed his sister. He knew she got pushed down the stairs because he remembers seeing her lying down there at the foot of the stairs when he broke in to rob his house. He doesn't know that she wasn't killed there, but somewhere else and moved there afterwards.
