Suspenders vs. belts, union suits vs. t-shirts

The clothing in this era is peculiar. Did pants come with belt loops, but most people chose to wear suspenders? If so why? Why did so few people wear belts in the 1920s, but today almost noone wears suspenders.

Same thing with union suits or long underwear. When did they phase out and briefs and t-shirts faded in?

Actually tailored expensive trousers always come with buttons for braces (what you are calling suspenders) and never have belt loops. This is still true today.

If you're wondering why it's because when you have trousers tailored they fit, they don't need a belt. The braces make the trousers hang perfectly from the shoulder giving a clean neat line, they look much smarter. If you sometimes wonder why actors in James Bond style roles 'stand out' it's because they are using tricks like this on their clothes but not the other actors.

Also they are very likely using shirt stays in Peaky Blinders for some characters too - these connect the shirt to the socks via elastic which make the shirts super straight and stop them ruffling, showing off the actors body.

You would be surprised how many people wear these things on a day to day basis to look good. If you ever notice a man who stands out with a suit it's because he is using these techniques. You can buy all these things from a decent tailor.
