Yes, it is sappy, but Jewel really shines.

For those who may not know, Jewel Kilcher is an accomplished recording artist, and quite different from June Carter, who didn't really have a very good singing voice. Jewel sings quite like Carter in this movie and her acting is great. Just for Jewel's performance this is a worthwhile, though lightweight, movie.
