Why time was up? [spoilers]

Why did Lasse decide to end Merete's life after holding her captive for 5 years? Was it because Lasse discovered the police were investigating her disappearance or, was it his plan all along?

He always intended her to die, but when the police came he knew he had to kill her then as they might discover her and rescue her.

I was secretly hoping we were being tricked into thinking both events were happening at the same time i.e. the police arriving at the farm and the tank being depressurised, but that it would turn out to be that she was actually already dead when the police arrived i.e. the depressurisation had actually happened some time ago. So the cops would still get their man, solve the case etc but not manage to save the woman. I think that would have been a more realistic turn of events given the gritty realistic tone that the film seemed to be aiming for.

Was a bit disappointed with the time honoured 'countdown to death/saved in the nick of time' scenario that we've seen in countless other films.

My impression of it was that he intended for her to die from the very beginning but wanted her to suffer for all the pain that she has caused him. Killing her immediately wouldn't satisfy his vengeance. He wanted to torture her and draw out her pain. Note that she wasn't experiencing that much actual physical pain; most of her torture was inflicted via psychological & emotional pain (just like how Lasse wasn't physically hurt in the car accident, but instead suffered profound psychological & emotional pain as a result of losing half of his family, watching his mother continue to suffer in her wheelchair and being put through the foster-care system like an orphan).

He definitely intended her to die as has been mentioned above, but I don't know what was significant about the 5 years. It wasn't the police investigation because he knew nothing about that until they lobbed up on the property and he'd told her the year before that this was to be her last year.🐭
