Her family's car was about to overtake his family's car and both children looked at each other as they met at the windows. She then stuck her tongue out at him and then clapped both hands over the eyes of her mother (who was in the front passenger seat), as a playful tease.
She then did the same trick with her dad (who was driving), at precisely the time a lorry was heading straight towards them...
She caused the accident that killed his father & sister and left his mother in a wheelchair. He saw her slowly wandering around the wrecked cars just before he passed out; she was probably in a concussed daze, but he must have assumed it was apathy.
You could see how unhinged he was at the orphanage when he excessively beat up the other child...
Perhaps the book explains it in more detail, but I thought it was plausible.
No, I think it was apathy, but in a childish, playfully carefree sense, not apathy out of malice. It was made quite clear that she made it out of the car without a single scratch. Merete as a little girl appeared to be a girl easily dazzled and captivated by the beauty (or what she regarded as beauty) of the world, even to the point of disregarding (or maybe not noticing) her two dead parents in front of the car and going out to play with the snow.
Her father was equally responsible for the accident because, knowing what a little devil she was, she tried to overtake a car. And on top of that, she didn't even have her seat belt on, since we saw her move freely in the car.

Interesting. I guess her father was responsible in a way - he should have speeded up to pass or not even attempted to pass with the truck coming. I really disliked the young girl though. Her character as an adult didn't seem as bad.
