German speakers - was that a typical German accent?

The one Hitler dude who worked on a boat in Germany, his accent seemed a little off. He mentioned being dropped off by his parents at an orphanage in Bratislava while they went on vacation for a month or two - and then they never came back for him, which is unbelievably harsh. Could that explain what I'm hearing as a "weird" German accent?
