the plates the lady was selling for $5.....

and the lady was like can you do 3??? Wow. I understand you wanting to get a deal but that lady was ridiculous.

I know! And then they paint the entire thing primary blue, but not the pull out tray? That looked awful.

last year my aunt was having a yard sale and an old lady asked how much for a pair of jeans she had on a table and my aunt said "fifty cents" and this joker said "would you take a quarter?" I was like are you kidding me! people like that are just haggling just to haggle and think they got a deal. its pathetic. btw my aunt gave them to her for a quarter.

reply

I can't understand selling something for that low...I mean for a quarter I would rather give it away to charity and be able to think I did something good rather than wasting time and energy to sell stuff for almost nothing.

Any amount saved is good... I'd like to own a place where you shopped. You'd just pay outrageous prices no matter what they were.

The "fun" of a yard sale or flea market is the haggling part. I don't ever go to either of those (I rarely go to either, in any case) to get something specific, I go because sometimes you see something cool marked $10 and you end up walking away with it for $4 instead because of the haggling.

To me, that's really the joy of shopping at places like that. Not really getting a deal, but engaging in the negotiation process.

Yes, haggling is fun, but there is a way to do it that usually comes with practice. I started my career buying and selling at flea markets. The dealer usually prices an item a few dollars more than they hope to sell it for. When you see something marked $12 or $15 chances are he will sell it for $10. There are exceptions, but a reasonable practice is to offer 10 - 20% less than what it's marked. Don't run the item down or say how much you've seen it for elsewhere. When people told me they could get the same thing for a fraction of my price, I would tell them to buy every one they could find and I would buy it from them at a profit, nobody ever did. Remember the dealer has time and money invested and there are other costs people don't consider. The main thing is don't insult the dealer, they are only trying to make a little money. I don't know of many people getting rich doing the fleas, most do it because they like old stuff and they like people. It's fun when you find something unique and the price is right, you're happy, the dealer is happy, it's a win win situation. Many times I find that a particular dealer has something I like every time I see them. You don't want to burn any bridges, they won't be as friendly or flexible if you've beaten them down for a few dollars in the past. Remember it's ok to counter offer but know when to stop, it's only a good deal when everyone feels satisfied. BTW I thought it was terrible when the gal offered $3 for the dishes, $5 was very fair.
