Why didn't she stay with Howard?

I get how she wanted Howard to get rid of her father, but I don't get why she didn't just stay with him? He clearly cared about her, was willing to risk losing money/his own career development in order to protect her - she'd already got this huge movie deal so was likely to get fame and fortune and land new parts easily. Howard had shown he was a good agent, getting the deal that they wanted by calling their bluff, and once he'd signed Lydia, he had lots of other opportunities coming in.

I just have no idea why she wouldn't just stay with him, and bother orchestrating the whole thing with Aldo - surely she could've just got Howard to get rid of her father and then stay with him as her agent? Was there some reason she couldn't have both?

In the end, by "doing the right thing", Howard lost her the movie deal, so she went to Rockwell's character to get it back.

It's more likely Aldo had people call up Howard and deny the deal went through (including that main casting lady) rather than her actually losing the role. The role was set in stone and generally if you lose a role, you're done for. No one wants to work with an actor that isn't able to perform. Missing the first few days of filming has cost a lot of actors their jobs.

I think she had to switch to Aldo because she played Howard bad and he'd never want to work for her from that point forward and the guilt she felt from that point. She clearly showed a lot of emotional pain for having dumped Howard and he saw it. For her it was easier to just switch to someone else rather than have to worry about Howard messing over the dad like he did. I think Howard would've played along though if he was let in to the manipulation and I think he would have even forgiven her, since he gave his life for her. So I think in that vein the movie went for the sad ending.

The happy ending would have been Howard and Lydia sitting down at a park bench and her chiding him about not knowing how evil Hollywood can be and him admitting she knows the game and that she should be a talent agent in the future.

.. I don't think that she wanted Howard to get rid of her father, i think that she used Howard to get rid of her father .. she did seem to care for Howard, but she really had a burning hatred for her father, for not rescuing her from that pedophile coach .. I think that she must have a fairly high IQ to have planned the whole thing along with that other sleazy agent, so quickly and on the fly .. I saw that coming when he freaked at the motel, since it didn't seem to add up .. not a bad film, but i thought that the shooting was unnecessary..

I'd say the whole thing screwed things up with Agnes, and Aldo was needed to get Lydia back in. Agnes must have been extremely pissed off by how he replied to her, by letting not sending Lydia back to her father just for a couple of days until everything is set and done. She didn't want to deal with him in the first place, and from that point on he was burnt. Having him as an agent is enough to not get a job in Hollywood. That sort of burnt.

he is a good person but that seems to make him a terrible agent.

I'm pretty sure she had planned it from the very beginning, the first time she saw Howard and saw that he was a caring person who would free her from her dad. So I don't think she ever planned to stay with Howard, from the 1st day she was probably scheming to get with a more successful agent like Aldo, but she needed Howard to get her out of her dad's influence so she'd have full control herself.

I kind of agree with you. One think I learned from casting agents is that the best ones are NEVER nice and emotional, they are sharks (i.e. Ari Gold) Its like real estate, if u back down too easily or rely on too many scruples, you may have a clear conscience, but never any clients
