In the beginning they show a close-up of the license plate on the kid's pick-up truck. It shows 1974. Also, they play The Connells, "'74-'75" driving in the car while Leonard is talking to the kid as background music. The song came out in 1993 so I'm assuming this mistake was intentional, the people who decided to add this thinking that most people would not know this song is not from the 70's since it does have a throw-back sound from then.

Also, The Connells are a band based out of Raleigh, North Carolina, having formed in 1984 by Mike and David Connell. They were big in the local area and colleges in the early 90's when "'74-'75" came out. This all seems to fit nicely since the movie is based in Madison County, North Carolina.
