Violence?

I see that the film is rated NC-17 for Explicit Sexual Content. I just saw the trailer today and it looked like it could be pretty violent but the rating doesn't say anything about violence. It's not a huge deal to me since most genuinely creepy films have low violence and are successful if the tone and setting is on point. Just something interesting I though I'd ask about.

Oh this film is sure violent. But since it got an NC-17, the description only focused on the biggest thing this film has: sexual content. For example, Blue is the Warmest Color was rated NC-17 for "explicit sexual content". But that film also had language and smoking, so why wasn't that in the rating description? Nowadays, NC-17 ratings just focus on the main thing the film has.

Rating descriptors only list the content that was responsible for the rating given. This film has violence and language, but only at an R level - not at an NC-17 level. Only the sex is at an NC-17 level. Ergo, violence and language aren't mentioned in the rating description, whereas they would be if the film had been rated R. With a film like El infierno (2010), for example, both sex and violence are at NC-17 level, so both are listed in the rating description.

All correct, except I thought it was unfair for El Infierno to be NC-17. It just didn't seem to be on the level that other films with that rating have.

This is Lukas, one of the filmmakers. Here's what we think of this stupid rating:

Some good points expressed in your article. However, your movie is about a porno. With that premise, exactly what kind of rating were you expecting? Especially when you admit that you didn't film the coverage needed to make any changes? I would think the NC-17 rating would have been your goal all along, which means that your business plan would have incorporated only VOD distribution and DVD sales. After viewing the movie, there's no way you could have expected anything less than NC-17, and your article states as much by saying that NC-17 is the "correct rating." So, complaining about a "correct rating" kind of undermines the intent of the article, don't you think? It's like complaining that a touchdown should actually be worth 8 points - AFTER you lose the football game.

Plenty of movies about porno that aren't x-rated, this one with blurred genitals and no gore was toned down and still got the kiss of death. He might as well have gone all out and not bothered getting a rating
