Great doc! (spoilers)

These kids were basically me growing up. (minus the whole, being told to stay indoors.)

My only gripe is that the filmmaker seems to make the Dad out to be a real bad guy. I personally don't think he was all that bad. Yeah, he should of let his kids out more, a lot more, but look how they turned out. Smart, articulate and genuinely caring.

Even when the one kids decided to go outside and was arrested, I was fully expecting the kids to talk about how the dad beat them for it, but he did'nt. Then all the kids decided to go outside from there on out and the dad seemed cool with it.

What is wrong with you? The dad locked them up for years keeping the only key. How is he not "a real bad guy"?? Last time I checked, child abuse such as this was a bad thing.

reply

Then why did he never get in trouble? Especially after this doc?

reply

Because social services and NYPD are notoriously incompetent when it comes to protecting children?

reply

Wow, even after an entire movie is made about it?

I assume all the children are now of legal age, or else the statute of limitations has expired.

reply

You assume wrong. The authorities concluded it wasn't child abuse: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/14/movies/the-wolfpack-brothers-step-out-of-their-world.html?ref=movies

I'm completely intrigued by this story and have a question.

Can someone who has seen the documentary please explain to me how the family subsists financially?

The mother home schools them all, and the father refuses to work. So how do they afford rent, utilities, food, in NYC?

Thanks in advance for an answer!

reply

To answer your question, they lived in low income housing and the mother received a stipend for homeschooling the children. Also, they likely got some additional aid since they had a mentally handicapped daughter.

I think the mom, Susanne, had a lot more influence on the family dynamics. How did a Mr. Oscar Angulo, a Peruvian Indian hear about Hare Krishna, a weird, American hippie religion based on ancient Hindu scriptures? Most Peruvians are Catholic! The only one that had visited Tibet was the mom, Susanne.

reply

They showed a picture of the mom Susanne when she was young...and she was a knockout...surprising how she married that guy and got locked up in that crap apartment for 20 years and not able to contact her family and friends....

The whole family seems to be so scared of the father until they got big...so I'm wondering if they're not talking about any physical intimidation by the father. They might be pissed, but sometimes you still whitewash the bad a bit....

diazaraceli,

Have you been to Peru? It's very spiritual. People make pilgrimages there. Westerners travel to Machu Picchu in droves. I'd be surprised if anyone there didn't know about Hare Krishna.

reply

When Christopher Columbus “discovered” the Americas, he thought he was in India. Till this day, Native Americans are referred to as “Indians”. The indigenous people of Peru had their own religion and worshiped their own deities. When the Spanish conquistadores arrived, they brought the Catholic religion.

Hare Krishna is an American hippie religion based on the ancient Hindu scriptures. So, it would make more sense for Hare Krishna devotees to make pilgrimages to India.

reply

Spiritual seekers don't limit their experiences. Shamans, pagans, wiccans, Buddhists, Krishnas, Hindus, Rastafarians and every other type of faith practitioner have traveled to Peru. Grateful Dead fans traveled there. It's not at ALL surprising that a native Peruvian would come into contact with all these religions.

reply

Jesus why are people sticking up for this guy?
Just because he's from Peru he is supposed to be ignorant to the world. What is he's supposed to be playing a pan flute, wearing a poncho and selling cds at the farmers market?
By your estimation because Hare Krishna is from America he can't know about it. How could I know about Sinn Fein? I'm not Irish. That makes no sense in your world does it ?
And since his wife is American he couldn't possibly know about social services? How ridiculous. He clearly knew about the social services in Scandinavian countries because he said that was one of the reasons why they wanted to go there.
Which would be right in line with what he does in America would you live off of social services in the Scandinavian countries have a notoriously tolerant social programs.
And I don't see how a guy who keeps his family locked under lock and key and his wife says "I don't want to get into the amount of rules that apply to me but they were worse for me than you work for the kids" (I paraphrased )can be seen as somebody who is innocent. I think you have a misconception that because he's Peruvian he must be some simpleton from the mountains you are a racist.

reply

To clarify I was saying that Diazaraceli is a racist and not others in this thread.
