SPOILER ALERT: The father....

...molested the boys. Lots of hints, kissing them on the lips like they were women and not just a quick peck, sexualizing them with the long hair in a feminine way, walking around shirtless with way too much contact, walking and hugging in a circle with no shirts and wearing underwear, the one boy shaving his eyebrows which is what transvestites do when they want to try putting on women's makeup, the mother claiming she couldn't be too candid about what the father did to the boys, the oldest who left the house and said he couldn't forgive the father for what he did and that they were no longer father/son, etc. The father's disgusting attempt to appeal for forgiveness but never claiming what he actually did to these boys for them to fail to even say goodbye to them when they went to the movies for the first time, the boys ignoring the father at the apple-picking farm and the father wanting to be with the mother but not the boys, etc.

Disgusting. Surprised nobody has directly mentioned this on the board.

Also, this movie is very much like 2007 documentary 'Surfwise' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0479547/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 where a father-and-mother of nine just leave the square life of his job as a doctor and decide to raise their nine children in a motor home and teach surfing up and down the Pacific Coast for food/gas/beer money. The same issues of resentment (and the grown boys recalling their father having sex with the mom right in their presence, while they were all adolescent boys with no outlet for their own desires) and growing up unsocialized with no job skills or way to make a living in the world.

reply

Wow! Those are some serious allegations! You're right no one has made such accusations before. Maybe they're afraid to get sued for defamation of character and slander?

Anyways, if you travel to South America, all the Indians have long straight hair, and run around half naked. Even the women are topless, and no one bats an eye.

As for kissing his sons on the lips? I've seen people do that before. In fact, famous mariachi singer Alejandro Fernandez still kisses his dad, Vicente Fernandez on the lips! Even though, he's a 40 year old man!

reply

Nah. Been, and still go, to S./C. America and people don't run around with long straight hair (even the 'Indians' as you so enlightenedly describe them!) and walk around topless or shirtless. It is a western culture, just poor and third-world; not primitive.

The six boys don't talk to the father anymore. Completely estranged. You saw how they shunned him when they all went out to see their first movie in the cinema. What do you think makes all six boys, who love their mother completely, all feel the same way about their father? What do you think Oscar is "sorry" for (he never says, but he keeps repeating how sorry he is and that he has told them many times, what do you think he did that he is "sorry" for but can't speak publicly about? And his wife Suzanne says directly in the film "I can't be too candid about that." What is "that" she is talking about? Just guess. https://thedissolve.com/features/emerging/1058-crystal-moselle-addresses-the-wolfpacks-many-open-/

reply

This is a mix of cultural differences and outright paranoia on your part. They hate him because he kept them locked up and isolated. The mother could mean lots of things when she says she cant be candid.

You just seem rather culturally ignorant. Lots of people who aren't drag queens shave their eyebrows. Especially people into punk rock.

I swear americans always think everyone is molesting kids.

reply

Like what 'kind of things' could mother Suzanne mean, when she says she can't be 'too candid' about that?

Those boys were with their mother, too. Their mother is an American citizen, with enough wherewithal to 'game the system' and get on welfare and paid for home-schooling the boys and buying them all movies and clothes and props and music and electronics. If they hated the father for keeping them locked up, they would hate the mother too, but they don't. They love her, unconditionally.

Look past your own anti-Americanism, and sympathy for boy-molesting cultures like Islam, S. America and Thailand. This is a movie made to establish a credit for the filmmaker, and make a profit. Not a criminal expose. But the truth is right there for those willing to see it.

reply

They wouldn't also hate their mother if they felt she was manipulated by their father or afraid of him.

And she could literally mean anything personal, like him abusing them physically, illegal activity, anything that would show him in an unflattering light.

But you're right, I am a big fan of muslims who molest little boys. I'm into that.

Who knows, I speculated on everything you've stated while watching the documentary and hoped that it wasn't true. The topic never came up. If his sons did not want to address the issue then there is really no need to pry. Their lives seem to be falling into place and that's really all that matters. Moving forward.

reply

I had the exact same feeling while watching this. It wasn't necessarily the kissing on the mouth between father and son. I understand that this can be a cultural thing and lots of families, including my own, express affection in this manner. The initial clue was in the beginning, when one of the sons was talking about forgiveness and things that you just can't get past. As he was speaking, the only thing I could imagine he was alluding to was possible sexual abuse. The rest of the film displayed a myriad of conversations and behaviors that certainly solidified that hunch for me...It would also explain why he felt the need to isolate the family so desperately.

reply

^^^ Yes. This. The drinking, the detachment from his own family, reality, obligation to work and be a husband/father, the control issues (one key? really?), the six paper-doll cutout boys, and the most telling of all is the hostility you describe.

The one line that jumped out at me was what I thought (at the first hearing) was an innocuous comment about the father in a positive light, and the son replying "if you say so" and then looking directly at the camera. Wow! This is a media-savvy 16-year-old, when he looks at the camera he is looking at his father watching the movie and it is mortifying. I wouldn't be surprised if a moment like this shows up in one of his films, as he moves through his movie worklife/career.

reply

you think that wasn't the first thing to cross my mind?

However, ridiculous....because the movie isn't real.

...yes, yes, that is your "feeling" and thanks for sharing your "feeling" that you can't quite put your finger on...

reply

It was more about the facts that I found out after my "feeling" that something was up while watching the film.

So yes I can put my finger on it, they can't keep their stories straight interview from interview and they can't answer a whole shyte ton of questions like why they couldn't flush a toilet but they could form a band with a full drumset and electric guitars just to name one out of hundreds.

Then there is those articles who straight up call it false, but..you keep believing it and then take it a step further and call the father a predator.

Joon: "you're out of your tree" Sam: "it's not my tree" 

reply

Nah. They live in a public housing building, toilets aren't a mystery to them and weren't part of the movie. They were introduced to music from their father, big fan of the Beatles and other pop music acts of the '60s, '70s, '80s, and MTV video acts.

Those "articles that call it straight-up false" are just some viewers' opinion (not even a reviewer). When you make an angry accusation, provide links and evidence. And, in your own words on another thread here, you stated "...I couldn't put my finger on it..." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2415458/board/thread/251031681?d=256213275#256213275 So, it is actually you who is lying, you have no evidence and say so elsewhere. And now, you claim you can put your finger on it?!?!! Rubbish!

reply

at first I couldn't put my finger on it, so I did some research, geez, what are you their publicist? Also, nothing more *beep* annoying than a troll who posts other people's posts except those who save them. Grow up.

Like I said in my own post, I watched the 20/20 interview and my heart ached for them, then when I saw the "documentary" something about it didn't ring true and I couldn't put my finger on it. So I did some digging, read some posts, read some articles and then it was crystal clear to me, anyway, that this was a false story and straight out lie about their father to make them more sympathetic for more publicity.

Again, these kids have been out of the house, it's been proven. They had an overprotective father from another country, a hippy mother who was taking all she could from the government to raise them and to pass the time they recreated movies that their dad bought them to entertain themselves. This fascinated the filmmaker, but it wasn't fascinating enough for Sundance, so she exaggerated, tagged on a storyline and hyped it up before they got there so everyone would go. That makes sense, nothing else does.

Hey, if I'm wrong and those people out there that worked on the film who are outing them are lying, people who did their research are wrong, those "mistakes" that keep coming up in interviews with these boys, their mother and the filmmaker, all turn out to be one big giant whoops on the interviewer's part and the father and the mother are in fact arrested, then hey, I was wrong. The worst I said was that they were faking it, I never called anyone a child molester.

Until there is an arrest made for locking 7 children in an apartment for 14 years against their will, I will stand by my statement, this "documentary" is not true, it's exaggerated, made up, full of inconsistencies and straight up lies. You keep on with your crusade though because if the father did molest them, he needs to go to jail. In fact, the mother and father both need to be in jail right now, yet she's strolling the red carpet. One of us is wrong here, I tend to think it's not me.

Next time, support your opinion. Writing more words doesn't support your unsupported opinion. Still waiting for those 'links' and 'articles' you read, and your recounting of the story is what the documentary shows, same as the 20/20 piff. Better luck next time, Detective!;-)

Wow, get a job or something Tara, I edited mine solely for spelling and grammar errors only.

You would be the suckiest detective in the world, keep your non existing day job.

Actually, you make JayCeezy look normal, just a poster who is passionate about his post. You're just a whack job who actually took the time to look up two member's posts date and times and just assumed we edited them for any other reasons other than spelling and/or grammar. I have no doubt he edited his for the same reason and I'm not even a fan of his, but I respect his passion for his stance on the film.

Whoops going to reply to my reply to you because I forgot to address your ridiculous statement that we didn't watch the film.

Not only has Jay mentioned numerous parts of the film in his OP, I have in mine. I don't have to prove to you or anyone, and I'm sure he'll say the same, that we watched it. What reason on earth would we possibly have to lie about that? How would we know so much? Don't bother to answer because I'm hitting the ignore button on you crazypants.

Another thing, I didn't look at the dates on the posts that I was replying to, 20/20 was aired on Friday or Saturday Night, I watched the documentary the very next day on Netflix, the threads were all on the first page.

Again Nancy Drew, stick to your non existing day job. Oh and if I have any spelling errors, I don't give a flying *beep*, you're not worth me correcting them for.

I'm sure you were just correcting spelling or just going back to address something you forgot to address in the post you were replying to, I know I was. Jeez Louise there are some whackos out there lol.

I've only been on this board for 2 days now but she's stating that we edited our posts months ago?  I wish I drank...more ;) lol

Each of you hold extreme opinions.
Each of you started your post-floods at an interesting time.
Each of you like to reply in older threads...bumpely-bump.
Edit, edit, edit...once even months later.

Same old, same old.
My favourite is the title of this thread.
An extreme opinion is a SPOILER now.

Both of you didn't watch the documentary.
By some details it's easy to realize.
Probably you've only read some posts here.
You're both amazing similar.

LAZAKA followed me to the Vikings (2013), behaved the same like here, cried about trolling of others and tried to pollute the Vikings with zillions of posts also.
Didn't last long there with the Vikings either.

Now I'm totally afraid and really need some warm socks too!
Always cozy with some socks in a board-battle.

And it's about 2 years ago IMDb changed the settings, means, it's easy to change a signature line into normal letters. But it's of course some work with many, many signature lines.
Hmmm...perhaps shouldn't mention it.
It's a first sign who's speaking...with such a nice signature line.
