Why did Zak and Marie touch?

Why does Zak say that he and Marie need to touch? He says it's to exchange frequencies, but then we find out that frequencies are changed through sound.

I realize something does change when they touch, since the color scheme of the movie changes and Marie says she starts to feel bad - but everything else later states that the frequency alternation is based on sound.

I can't speak on the writer's behalf, but I would suggest that it is relative to humans and their dependency on the sensation of touch. I know that infants will quite literally become brain damaged if they are not held on a regular basis.

I am led to believe that once they establish "community" they also subject themselves to new "side effects" such as sadness and other emotions.

I dunno.

Zak is fooling her, trying to make her love him. Works for a while, until she twigs what he did.

SPOILER?

Zak wasn't trying to trick her. He thought the "words" were just keeping his mojo up; he didn't know that she would have to do whatever he said after. He didn't even know about the music, yet.
I think he was just jamming, trying things to stay close to her, so the Frequencies would Balance.

Theo, on the other hand, purposely stops the music at the "right time".
