What other songs were you hoping for?

All in all, this was a great concert but we all have our favorite songs. What songs would you change up if you could pick the set list?
I would add:
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
Immigrant Song
Heartbreaker
Ten Years Gone(I missed that the most)
Travelling Riverside Blues(not typical for them but a great tune)
When The Levee Breaks
Bring it On Home
You Shook Me
The Rain Song

I would delete:
The Song Remains the Same( never liked that one)
Stairway (they hate that song and they don't seem to give it much effort)
Ramble On (Ok Song but others I prefer)
Misty Mountain Hop
--on the bubble-- Black Dog (pains me to list it but this is one song that he just cant sing anymore, you need to right howl for this to sound great)

I added more than I took out...guess they would have to just play longer!

My three favorite songs to jam to are For Your Life, Hots on for Nowhere and In My Time of Dying, so I was 2 for 3. Immigrant Song physically impossible, even with everything tuned down a full step; Over the Hills and also The Ocean would have been great. And thank god he finally shelved the Danelectro for IMTOD, the ES-350 has much better tone. The Dano sounded pathetic on the Live at the Greek CD with the Black Crows in 2000.

I was hoping for:

The Rain Song
When the Levee Breaks
Ten Years Gone
Thank You
Achilles Last Stand
Gallows Pole

I think they could have done without
Trampled Under Foot
Stairway to Heaven

Though I did feel they played the songs too safe. One thing I love about their live performances is how different they do their set list and I felt that the songs, as good as they sounded were played too close to the cuff.

I'm watching the film right now and on "In My Time of Dying". I can't speak for them, but I'm wondering if they didn't play it safe just because they knew this was a one-off event and wanted to give the fans what they want, which was Zeppelin tunes? If they did several dates I could have seen them jamming out more of the songs, but as it was, they may have wanted to just go out and please the fans.

reply

Achilles Last Stand should definitely have been played/

If you watch the '79 Knebworth shows, the band had already started to "play it more safe" by that time. Meaning the songs were shorter, they didn't "stretch them out" as much as they did in earlier days - they played them closer to what they were on the record.

One reason they did this was because over the years they started to accumulate more songs they wanted to include in the concerts. If they did a lot of improvising on all of the songs the shows would have gone on forever. And Zeppelin shows tended to be long to begin with. So to fit the extra songs in they started to cut down on the improvisation.

I was very pleased with the set list. I would have liked to have heard "When the Levee Breaks," but you can't have everything. I agree with the poster who said Immigrant Song would not have been possible. Ramble On and Misty Mountain Hop are two of my favorites and I loved hearing them do the blues numbers. I thought Plant did ok with Black Dog. How could they possibly not have done Stairway to Heaven.

reply

I was devastated that they didn't perform In The Evening. That's some track.

reply

Personally, what would've been neat to see was letting Jason Bonham take a crack at "Moby Dick" (or, in this case, "Son of Moby Dick").

reply

The Ocean. It's really a shame it wasn't in.

reply

In the Evening.

Immigrant Song.

The Rover; Celebration Day. And there's no way they couldn't have played Stairway. That just wouldn't be right.

Immigrant Song: When the Levee Breaks: The Ocean: The Lemon Song.

Still, I was surprised when they not only played Kashmir in the right key, but also that Robert Plant nailed it.

I think that "playing it safe" would have been using autotune and/or having backing singers to sing the high notes only (Billy Joel does this or did). To get up and sing it straight took balls.

Elton John's voice these days is a shadow of what it was, and he drops keys and shies off high notes all the time.

reply

That's not really Elton's fault, he had a botched surgery on his vocal cords many years ago, and it permanently shifted his tone and range.

Sometimes you've just gotta adapt to use what you still have.

Thank you for riding with MTA, New York City Transit.

wish - Gallows; Levee

the 2 early Blues [ IMTODying; Nobodys FBM] were nice upfront respectful inclusion.

Ramble on was killer , totally full on hard rocking.
