...create a new human race (the young girl who was killed and later on the baby that the Justine Bateman clone gives birth to at the end) capable of resisting an oncoming virus (plague) that will eventually wipe out humanity.

or

Create a new superhuman race, but the parents either die during the process if they aren't suitable candidates or they end up with a disease as a side effect if they are suitable candidates.

Any other theories?



Another question for the confusing ending is... Did they finally escape with their child, or they were eventually left free with their baby at the end?
