I want this movie to be good...

I just recently heard about this upcoming movie, and I really, really want it to be good. However, I've searched around the internet and seen some previous works from the director, the main actor, the DP, and the editor. I gotta say... those previous works are not inspiring a lot of confidence. And since Rich Mullins never wished for a movie to be made of his life, if you screw this up his family will likely never allow anyone else to try again.

Not unlike Jesus, there are a lot of fans who have made Rich into their own image. Many only know him as the "Awesome God" singer. They'd be scared of some of the deeper, intimate truths of who Rich was (I had the honor of interviewing him about a year before his death. He still offered surprises). If you whitewash this amazing poet's life to please the masses then you'll end up disappointing everybody. Avoid sentimental horsesh*t. Be true to Rich.

Again, I REALLY want you all to do a good job. So please don't settle for "good enough." This is not the movie for that. Step up your game.

Have you looked at the trailer yet? I guess it was posted about a month ago and someone else on the message boards has linked to it.

I found it while watching some old Rich Mullins concert footage. I thought the trailer looked like the movie will follow his life pretty well. Of course, we really won't see until it actually comes out.

Sure, I think they could have cast someone who looks and sounds a little more like Rich, but I'm hoping that they've made the right decision. The director is pretty young, so maybe the prior work you've seen him do was him working out his kinks and maybe he'll hit it really well with this one.

I grew up a Rich Mullins fan and thought all the more of him when I found out just how flawed he really was. Made me feel better knowing that even great Christian artists have struggles like mine. And it gives me an example of another human just like me who's looking to live like Jesus.

Now I'm getting all sentimental, haha. But really, I agree with you. I hope they do a good job.

I was on the set when the actor playing Rich did some of his scenes. Rich's brother was visibly moved by his performance. For me that was enough. His nephew actually plays the young Rich. No one will ever be Rich Mullins but I will tell you that the director and actors all feel the same way you do about capturing the heart of this story.

Thanks for the responses. I've also had a chance to see the trailer and so far it does look really good! On the other hand, I work in the business so I know how a trailer can hide the weaknesses of a film. Then on the other, OTHER hand if they can put together a solid trailer like that it does give me hope for the film. The acting looks strong all around. The plot points seem true to Rich. I know that if this is a good and true film then I'll be one of the biggest cheerleaders for it. Until then I'll hold on to both skepticism and hope, and I'll be looking forward to whatever distribution deal they are able to land.

szpt - You definitely need to catch up, there isn't a distribution deal. I am way too tired to explain it, so again I encourage you to go to the site for the film, now to see this Tour format they're doing. It's a pretty cool deal.

I never read a statement from Rich about never wanting a movie to not be made.
The Internet is not always the best source of truth.
Rich's family & closest friends (one i am not sure he would be friends with now as this is a really cruel, harsh person) gave it their blessing.
Mitch McVicker was involved - aside from Rich himself having said "I never want a movie made about my life. That would be terrible and wrong", I think they're OK. And if you have kept up at all with David Schultz, you will know the blood, sweat and tears that went into this.

So none of those things are going to be a problem.

I really wish they had put a spoiler or caution sign up in the trailer though and i also don't want to see this on a movie screen - it was bad enough being at the Memorial and hearing these women behind us who were nurses talking about DETAILS that i can never un-hear about his death. So I don't want to see it on the screen,

All i can say is that we can't know what it is unless we see it - don't gripe about what you haven't seen, OP, and it sounds like you haven't read what the movie makers & Rich's bro have said. So check that out, it might help you decide if you want to see it. And hey, it might not come to your town, then you won't have to worry at all.

Thank you for being the IMDB Hall Patrol. I'm sure somebody appreciates it, even if it is just you.

So I got to see the film twice over the weekend. All in all I was happy with everything, and it certainly moved me to tears a lot during the first screening. Seeing it a second time allowed me to watch with a more critical eye, but I was still moved during the deeper moments.

I was able to talk with one of the producers, and he did mention an issue or two that popped up in the process of making the film. I won't share the specifics because every film has problems to overcome, and some are only known to the filmmakers. The rest of the audience will never even know about it, and I even felt that this "problem" lent to a certain perception of the events in the film that was positive overall. Sorry, no spoilers!

The acting from the lead is strong, and most of the supporting actors hold their own. There could have been another pass on the script focused on polishing the conversational dialogue, but overall the interactions rang true. Shot well and with good lighting, so the crew certainly knew what they were doing. In a pass/no pass scenario I certainly think the film works. Out of 10, I'd give it an 8.

I agree with one other reviewer that this film should not be compared to Hollywood blockbusters. It may not even fit with the indie circuit. However, it is a worthy final product that holds its own. And, from what I've heard, is touching people of various beliefs on a variety of levels.
