Stuff Like That Just Doesn't Happen

A fat girl
Who self abuses
Seen semi-naked in public

The girls might be ok with her if they have a shared history and if she is a good laugh. In this situation they would not be. At best they would pity her and then move on. The guys however would not even do that.

They would laugh
They would talk about her behind her back
They would tolerate her because they fancied her friends.

That's life folks!

Since she's insecure and has scars all over her legs I'd have assumed she would have chosen to wear basketball shorts and a t-shirt to the pool. It would have made things less nerve-wracking and she would have felt a hell of a lot less insecure. And that's not necessarily true. Some who don't understand might tease or make jokes, but most people avoid commenting on people's scar like it's a freakin' plague because it just makes everyone feel uncomfortable. Plus, we don't really know much about the characters so we can't give an informed guess on how they'd react.

reply

I noticed that as well lol people really don't like to talk about self harm. You could hold the scars up to their eyes and they'll compliment you on your bracelet lmao, that's such an uncomfortable topic for some people. It's best to have it one on one, like someone like Finn... I could've really used when I went through depression

reply

And I agree with that too, they didn't really depict how a truly insecure person would feel. Definitely not be so quick to wear a swimsuit to the pool or try to find really tight clothes and dresses. I feel like they used her insecurity whenever they wanted to. Like "let's make her confident for this scene" but then in the next scene she's insecure again.

reply

Your life perhaps. But not everyone else's.

"Oh, Britta's in this?"

reply

Not necessarily and they are hardly the "cool gang". We don't really know the characters well enough to judge them either.
Also it's set in the 90's, so many "rockers" self harmed in the 90's, at least the ones in my town and school did, really wasn't that shocking a discovery.

reply

That seems to be the case in reality.

George Lucas talking about: 'Hey, give it to me, I'll fix it. I'll make 20 more of them'

reply

isn't it based on true events (Rachel Earl being a real person)?

though I'm inclined to agree with your post

reply

well, for all we know they DO talk about her behind her back. but other than being fat, she hasn't really given them much more to talk sh*t about. she's pretty chill when she's around them.

and chloe IS an old friend, and she's mainly the one inviting her to hang out. they don't know she self-harms (yet).

not ALL teenagers are awful. some of them are even understanding and open-minded.

It may be reality now, but this is set in 1996, and the people she befriends are on the 'alternative' music scene.

If you were on the scene at that time you would know that these people were the least judgemental people ever (except when it came to music, and Rae had already proved herself there- by choosing the right song on the juke box, and ordering them to turn off Boyzone).

She also handled the semi-naked in the street, and the slide in the pool incidents really well, which earned her respect in the group.

The group are completely realistic to the type and time. It's just a real shame that it's not like this anymore.

reply

I totally agree. It's a very realistic scenario for a 90s alternative music group of friends.

In our group, kids ranged from metal heads, punks, indie kids, rockers, townies who liked rock. As long as you were 'alternative' you were accepted. Even some 'chavs' or townies as we called them, liked some rock bands like Oasis.

And many bands at that time had singers with 'issues'. I reckon kids were a lot more open minded, without glamourising it.

Rae absolutely would have been accepted. She would have been respected for her music knowledge and built a friendship around that.

From what I read, this actually occurred in the 80s, but for music and other reasons, they moved the story line to the 90s. Even for the 80s it would make sense. People experimented and things were starting to sort of change and what not. I don't think that her friends were unrealistic at all.

Speaking as someone who is overweight, I had a group of friends very similar to that, or at least somewhat similar. You had your best friend who you were friends with since childhood and basically drove you nuts, even if mine wasn't really like Chloe. Then you had your questionable guy in the group, your jerk kind of like Chop who always teased you and called you some weird name, then you had the guy you liked and maybe one weird friend kind of like Izzy.

I mean, if you're really friends with someone, you don't care about those sorts of things. Yeah, it's hard, and you may wonder why the person did it, but if you really care about someone, you just don't care about that stuff. Rae was funny and they liked being around her. They didn't care about that stuff because they knew her before they found out about the mental ward and what not. They didn't even know what the scars were from, so they said nothing since they assumed it was just an accident.

Plus, as someone else had mentioned, we don't know much about the other characters yet. Chloe seems to be the only one who is really popular, and then Archie is gay, but it is clear he is kind of boring what with the quotes and knowledge, so Rae has stated. Finn is the quiet type, kind of a jerk, in the beginning, and he admitted he didn't like talking to anyone, aside from Rae, so he is clearly kind of not outgoing. Izzy is that bubbly chick who probably annoys most people, and Chop is kind of a jerk but a loud mouth, but deep down a halfway decent guy even if he would never admit it. Plus, they may be friends now, but they're also not in school. We don't know how they are when they're not in school, because Rae hurt herself in March, and then by summer Chloe was in their group and introducing Rae to them, sooooo, it's very likely the group was friends even before Chloe came along, which means they're kind of a group of delinquents.

It will mainly depend on how season 2 goes.

yes, i wonder how things will change if we get to see them at school. keeping it all together around a tight-knit group of friends is one thing; keeping it together surrounded by hundreds of teenagers who don't give a sh*t is another thing. especially now that the cat's out of the bag.

rae mentions that she and chloe had been drifting apart the past year. so who was rae friends with at school, outside of chloe?

i can't imagine rae had NO other friends because she's pretty likeable, but then again, she is genuinely shocked that there are cool people in lincolnshire, so many she wasn't close with anyone else.
