Why DOES Finn like Rae?

Don't get me wrong, I love both characters and I know this is based on a real story and being a woman myself, I am all for embracing female bodies of all sizes but I still find it very difficult to understand just why Finn is head-over-heels for Rae. Most hot guys of a college-age would find it challenging to have an obese girlfriend but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. But they're just sooo mismatched (and not just b/c he's thin & hot and she's fat). I mean, in the way they dress, move, talk, engage with other people, etc. Aside from the original gang, it doesn't seem like she is friends with any of his other friends. She avoids him at school and it's like she's not even part of his life. Plus, she doesn't even make an effort to look nice and walks around with limp hair, music tees and flannel shirts. She might have a great personality but there are loads of girls out there who have killer personalities along with being physically attractive. I just don't see that special extra something in Rae that would draw Finn to her.

Not everyone is vapid and shallow, when you mature you realise looks aren't the most important thing in the world. Rae and Finn have a lot in common, they have the same interests, she is funny, intelligent and he likes the fact that she is different.
P.s I have yet to meet a really attractive person who isn't narcissistic in some way or another, and the only thing that Rae is is overweight, she is not remotely ugly.
And also that was the way people dressed in the 90's we weren't as shallow as you kids thesedays....

That is probably the perfect answer.

I'd say they have a connection that Finn hasn't felt with anyone else. I myself have found myself falling for guys that I at first wasn't physically attracted to.

It feels like you haven't been watching the show all that closely. Rae has on diff occasions put on makeup and dressed up quite lovely. There's nothing wrong with what she chooses to wear. She is a beautiful girl. I understand that a lot of people think it's a big *beep* deal if you're a fat girl but clearly that doesn't phase Finn. And he's not an odd guy. There are tons of guys that don't care about a girl's size. Everything is arbitrary. You're not being defined in comparison to the next girl, you're just you. Finn just likes Rae b/c he's Rae.

Rae avoided Finn b/c outside of their little group she found it hard to represent herself alongside Finn. She went through the same kind of questioning you're engaging in right now and she couldn't handle it. It's kind of ironic. She doesn't understand his feelings for her. She needs to be able to love herself in order to appreciate how Finn loves her. He has pride being with her. Being with the woman he loves. But she can't understand it b/c on a societal level there's something wrong with her being with a stereotypical hot guy. She can't see the beauty in herself. So much of the show is about her learning to accept herself in all her flaws and imperfections and just roll with the punches. And yeah, she's both fat and beautiful.

In addition to all the great replies to your question I would also add that Finn, being the hottest guy in college, probably was with a lot of hot popular girls. Stacy, his ex, being the best representative of those. Stacey is shallow beyond belief, and so are most of those 'gorgeous' girls. Finn is a smart guy, not the least bit shallow, so looks don't matter to him.
Also they have a lot in common, taste in music, sense of humor, they're both good people. When you take away the difference in their physical looks, they're just like any other couple.

But they're just sooo mismatched (and not just b/c he's thin & hot and she's fat). I mean, in the way they dress, move, talk, engage with other people, etc.

I don't think people need to dress and act the same to be a good couple; you look for someone who completes you, not your replica.

“I felt like destroying something beautiful.”

I agree with a lot you have all said but the thing is even though it is based on diaries written in the 80's Finn is fictional , which seems a little odd as it is such a bit part of the story but very enjoyable all the same

This. Many guys really like girls Who are funny and interested in the same thins as us. That way more important than looks.

The show has already specifically dealt with this question. Not everyone is attracted to the same people. The Series 2 finale should've explained a lot of this to you (if you were actually paying attention).

I just thought I'd tackle this part... You mention nothing about being physically attractive, yet you point to it as the key factor.

Also, whats wrong w/ music tees and flannel shirts as a regular form of dress?

There so much...

I applaud any guy, who dares stray away from the peer pressure of what the media says a female should wear. Is she supposed to wear heals and a short skirt every other day? Or paste her face with disgusting makeup??

I find that more disgusting than tees and flannel shirts...

It's also a personal opinion of yours that there are girls who dress otherwise(than you criticize), I on the other hand have rarely met girls who were into vanity that had likable personalities, why? because they don't think their *beep* stinks.

...anyway, opinion stated.

Why does anybody like anybody? He just does.
