This is my first time seeing this actor, but the first that came into my mind was that he was a Polansky look alike

Polanski and Amalric's families hail from the same Polish village. Maybe they're the most diffused physical type there. :-)

In the extras on the DVD, Polanski says that Amalric pointed out the resemblance -- which is what all of us viewers had been thinking throughout the movie.

I'll note that Emmanuele Seigner strongly resembles Catherine Deneuve.
