Do not watch

I do not care how famous/artistic/popular this creep is, I for one will not support a pedophile. Maybe Charlie Manson was on to something.

Here's a violin and a phone. Play a sad tune and call someone who cares.

You don't know the meaning of "pedophile" and your Manson comment says quite a bit about you.

Roman Polanski is not a pedophile. He had consensual sex with a fifteen year old that looked much older. That was one time. It was an isolated incident. Roman Polanski is European where the legal age for sexual consent is 15 in some countries and 16 in the others.

The facts stated do not match what is in the legal documents. In 1977, Polanski was 43 years old and admitted having sex with a 13 year old girl (not 15). The girl claimed she was under influence of alcohol and part of a drug Polanski had given her. Polanski made a plea agreement in which he admitted guilt. He could have served a relatively small sentence, but instead acted like a total pussy and ran away to avoid his sentence.

Polanski's work is outstanding and worthy of awards, but his personal life includes one very bad decision that has haunted him all these years. He knew what he was doing when he fled, so don't ask someone to dismiss the repulsiveness of his behaviors. That said, his personal indiscretions should not skew one's view of his professional accomplishments.

Actually he plead guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor so he never admitted to rape. He was sentenced to a 90 day psychiatric evaluation in which the judge would listen to the doctors findings. The doctors argued against incarceration. It was only after public criticism that the judge decided to change the deal after the fact. Thats when he fled.

I'm not going to defend him or downplay his crimes but those are the facts.

He had penetrative sex with someone well under the age of consent (I believe there are additional penalties for her being under 14 at the time). He also "contributed to her delinquency" by giving her alcohol and pills. My understanding is that he also committed sodomy (not that I think there's anything wrong with it when it's between consenting adults) which I believe is another, separate charge.

I wonder if the laws have changed that substantially since the late seventies - if those acts were prosecuted today, minimum sentencing would dictate at least ten years, certainly not a 90 day slap on the wrist (that he ran away from, like a coward).

I really liked the movie, but I always feel conflicted when I watch his stuff. For about ten years, I wouldn't touch it at all. I guess it is far enough removed chronologically now (and the child he raped, now a grown woman, has publicly forgiven him) that I should get over it, but he still squicks me out (on a personal level), and I would never want to have him to dinner, let alone leave him alone with children. Professionally, though, his work is excellent.

They're coming to get you, Barbara!

a girl who's 15, as long as not being retarded, is considered mature enough to have sexual relationships, as she's free to do that, which was Polanski's case. Jerk

reply

Many great artists have been far from perfect human beings, but we still read, listen, watch their works. Polanski is not afraid to examine his own psychology in this film, which is more than most of us can claim.

Maybe Charlie Manson was on to something.

So it's okay that Manson and his gang cold-bloodily killed a pregnant woman (Polanski's wife, Sharon Tate), along with four others? You are the one who is repulsive.
