Emmanuelle Seigner

I like Emmanuelle Seigner and think she is a really good actress. But don´t you think she is to old for this role? Of course she is still hot and nice to watch ;-) but as far as I know her character in the stage version/play is much younger. What do you think?

reply

Think it could be a nice spin. Instead of the young actress starting out she could be the older actress trying to regain her noteriety or an actress whose been in the game for so long with not much to show she is willing to do anything for the break she's felt she has so long deserved.

Just my thoughts of course, have no idea if film is gonna address the age thing.

reply

Yes, I think the older actress trying to make it is much more interesting and dramatic. The young one is so typical.
I hope it's gonna be a great one! Can't wait!

reply

I like this concept much better, too.

reply

Disagree. Mostly because, the desperation thingy will be easily satisfied here. I would love to watch her again!

I think it is a complete miscast Mathieu and Mrs. Polanski.

In the movie, the first thing we hear from the director's mouth is his complaining that all he gets are ditzy young actresses, so to see this middle-aged woman barging into the theater for an audition works very well.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

reply

I don't want to spoil any plot point to those who haven't seen the movie or aren't familiar with the play. I'll just say that, once the true nature of her character is fully revealed, it's clear that the actress' age hasn't really much relevance, as long as she's very seductive. And the fact that the movie is the adaptation of a play and has a stagey feeling about it makes the age of the actors even more secondary.

And by the way, Emmanuelle was a knockout. Under an aesthetic point of view (obviously) and in terms of performance as well. I would have never imagined that she could have been capable of such greatness. She and Amalric were a sublime acting duo.

reply

Yes I agree completelly.

In fact I like the movie, but I think the cast is not so well.

How can you like the movie but not the cast? The movie is the cast!!!

reply

NO, the movie IS THE SCRIPT.

Never the cast can save a movie.

It doesn't matter how good a script is, you need the actors to pull it off. You say you like the movie, so you must to a certain degree think that the actors pull it off, yes?

reply

In certain way the actor´s works is make real the script.
The script is the idea, the performing is show the writer/director idea.

A good script can be a good or bad movie.
A bad script NEVER can be a good movie.

There are a lot of big actors that make awful movies.

In this case the main idea is brilliant, because you can see the how the power chance the hands.
It is so difficult to show.

But for me (maybe only for me) I don´t know exactly why, I saw that the female character was not for this actress.

I also had to look up her age, because I noticed a lot of skin smoothing on screen, like Photoshop. Not a single wrinkle on close ups, not even creases under jaw, everything too smooth to look real. Just like a cosmetics ad. A lot of CGI postproduction for enhancing Mrs. Seigner look.

reply

What did you watch this on? An 8inch t.v. from the 60's? She clearly had wrinkles and "imperfections" in the theatre I saw it in. I don't understand why her age is a problem for anyone. It worked perfectly for the film, and that is what we were all watching.

reply

I saw a very beautiful, middle-aged woman, with very nice skin (but who looks her age), being lit in a very professional and flattering way. Not CGI. I don't get the issue with her age either - the director wanted a more confident, experienced, older woman for the role. His wife (who looks really natural to me) fit the bill. I can't see a young, model-type of actress having the aesthetic necessary for the role. It's also a French movie, with French actors, and their standard of beauty tends to be a bit more naturalistic and less like an avatar (for lack of a better word).

They're coming to get you, Barbara!

reply

How old is Venus? A younger actress would not, I feel, be as convincing as the play unfolds, she has to convey depth and experience and that is hard for the young to do without seeming spooky.

reply

I suppose it could have/would have worked with a younger actress, but I think it works better with an older one. Particularly towards the end.

Those who say she is too old for the role don't seem to have understood the film. The woman was not there to audition for the part.
