Last scene ( huge spoiler)

I saw the movie a few days ago. In the last scene, did the former wife of samir (selin) press his hand or not? I concentrated a lot but I saw no movements whatsoever, but I read a review that said: she DID press samir's hand.Which one happened? I'm really confused . please help me!

reply

No, she didn't press it. At first, Farhadi's shot of her hand seemed to suggest that she would have done it. But she didn't. It was a great piece of directing I thought. Had she done it, it would have been too soapy.

reply

I don't know about that. But she was crying and there was a tear coming down from her eyes. Although Samir didn't see that. But we (the audiences) saw it. I know that this doesn't prove that she will be awake in some day in future. (becoz a lot of people who are in coma and cry, never get up again.) But the thing is that it doesn't matter if she pressed it or not.

They should have cut to black earlier, it would have been like Inception ;)

there was a tear running down her face and her hand was slightly holding his as well.she reacted. she pressed his hand.
that was the beauty of the last scene. it was so touching.

Watched the movie again two days ago. Loved it even more the second time around. I still don't see her hand moving. Samir's does and I think this creates the illusion that hers moved as well.

reply

I thought Samir looked down because she started pressing his hand when she cried. Either way you look at it, it is still haunting and beautiful.

reply

How is it haunting and beautiful, though? The fact that she might possibly recover is haunting and beautiful? I'm not trolling, could you elaborate on why you (and most others, from what I've read) think that scene is so moving?

reply

I took it as representative of the power of marriage. After all was said and done, their connection mattered more than anything else.

I saw it in a darker way. Yes, I saw the tear, and no, I don't believe her hand moved. I think she did react to his cologne (hence the tear, because of what he did or whatever) but Samir never saw the tear. So he believes that there's no chance of her ever recovering.

This was the last-chance saloon, remember that Samir says that the sense of smell is the last sense to go, so the fact that his wife doesn't react to his cologne (or rather, he thinks that she doesn't react) means that he is now going to tell the doctors to switch her off.

So it adds an extra level of darkness to the movie.

I agree with everything you said.

I thought the tear was a stroke of genius on the director's part. It was subtle, yet it also packed a powerful punch of emotion.

What I noticed and concluded (not sure if anyone else did), was that if you watch the corner of her eye, you actually see the tear form to the point of balancing, ready to fall, before Samir says a single word to her. However, what he does do, is move very close to her, hinting to me, that she did in-fact know he was there and did recognize and respond to the perfume, hence the tear forming before he spoke.

It really was cinematic perfection. As Samir leans in, saying nothing, her tear forms... he speaks, her tear falls, he does not notice, but I do not believe her hand hand moves, his does. It's my perception, he just missed her only way of acknowledging his presence while at the same time saying her goodbye. Or... it could have been, I know you're there, I smell you, I'm still here, don't give up on me yet. However, with this last scenario, as he didn't see the tear, I fear he'll believe she has 'gone' and will move forward with turning off her machines. However, that in itself, does not mean she'll die! She just may breathe for herself, it happens more often than we are aware.

Either way you look at it, it is a sad, but beautiful ending.

Yes, there was definitely just a single tear drop that rolled down her cheek, but not a major crying scene.

my reaction was quite the opposite: this last scene seemed so kitschy to me and was at odds with the rest of the movie. didn't find it touching at all.

I dunno much about patients in coma, but her tear should be proof enough that she reacted to Samir's request?

reply

Yes, obviously there was at least some response from the comatose wife. But more interestingly is- What the heck does this mean for the film????

Will Samir go back to his wife when she recovers? Will Luci feel less guilty now? Etc? Will Ahmad and Mrs. DramaQueen get back together again?

reply

her hand was gripped around his thumb

reply

I agree with shirin-rokoi. I didn't see Celine press Samir's hand, but a teardrop fell down the left side of her face, which Samir may not have seen.

It's an interesting ending, but I wish the last third of the movie was more about Ahmad rather than Samir.
