6/10. Here's why:
LE PASSÉ is translated as THE PAST. Is that why, while I watched it, I had flashbacks to the time I watched JODAEIYE NADER AZ SIMIN (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGs4ZvCt6xw)? Seriously though, it's hard not compare both movies. Not just because they were both written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, but also because they have a similar premise. The difference is that the latter wasn’t just about a divorce, but a divorce where the wife wanted to move to another country with the daughter. In the former, the husband has already left to another country and returns to make the divorce official. Also, that movie had secondary conflicts that felt like a threat and that were complex representations of human beings from every country. The secondary conflicts here aren’t bad enough to make the characters do something other than sit around waiting for the audience to learn the next plot twist, and they’re a little far-fetched and not relatable enough. The result is a well-acted movie with no sense of urgency.
