One of the best remakes in a while!

Honestly, I understand the criticism this film gets but for a re-make this is actually a good effort, admit that guys!

I review films and give you tips! http://www.tiptiger.co.uk/top-10-films-of-2016

I'll admit there wasn't one thing about this movie that was good and you must have ridden the short bus to school.

All movies are popcorn movies. Unless you don't buy popcorn.

...and you must have ridden the short bus to school.

It's important to insult people in your response because it lends to your credibility as a 12 year old.

Except in the case of someone who said this is a good remake, that insult is a compliment. The OP would have to have multiples of his IQ to be able to qualify for the short bus. Awful movie.

The cinematography and the score were great! This film captured that old western feel so well. Level with me.

Really .....really????

I don't think for a second that this move was a good effort for a re-make of the original Magnificent Seven. It nothing but a money grab.

reply

I agree. Good entertaining western. Doesnt need to change your life to be a good movie you guys.

For what it's worth, one day before the forums disappear; Yes, it was quite alright. Entertaining enough to keep me focused throughout.

The classic Japanese film the “original” Magnificent Seven was based on makes the latter look like a piss poor remake itself (and I am fond of both).

The 2016 version? It thoroughly kicks ass. Fun, sharp, well-acted, uncompromising (judging by all the criticism from the holier-than-thou “too PC” manbabies), and well-put together. And at least it doesn’t take itself too seriously like the drumpf crowd (yeah you got that right).

One benefit of this remake is that the 1960 original is that it could increase the level and intensity of its action sequences .

The two big action sequences in the 2016 version are worth the price of admission: The first standoff of the 7 against the bad guys holding the town prisoner, and the final battle in which(perhaps unlike the original), it is made clear that this is actually a "war battle" in which one Army is far more staffed than the other. Granted the 7 "even the odds" with dynamite, but we still see that 7 being hired to take on 200 is a bad bet(as in the original, not everyone lives on the good guy side.)

The increase in action and the casting of Established Star Denzel and New Star Chris Pratt made this movie feel "A list" to me. It will never be remembered as the original was(with its incredible cast of stars not yet stars -- McQueen, Coburn, Bronson, Vaughn -- joining Yul Brynner and the rest), but it used the sturdy framework of the Kurosawa original and the 1960 Western remake for an entertaining new version.

And remember, in between the 1960 Magificent Seven and the 2016 Magnificent Seven, we had three bad sequels and a "meh" TV series. This is the best of the knock offs.

I haven't seen enough remakes to offer a truly informed opinion. However I did think it a fine effort. Denzel was superb as always. While the diverse cast has drawn some criticism on these boards, I hadn't noticed it until I read the complaints here.

My biggest and main complaint is that the original theme song was not used!!! The song made the original uplifting and fun. Its absence here rendered this film much darker and violent.

I recommend the film.

The original theme song DOES appear...at the very end, to launch the end credits and to nicely accompany shots of each of the actors playing the 7 and their assemblage into one group on screen.

Its a pretty exciting moment, really -- as the new one pays full homage to the most memorable aspect of the old one.

Also, on the DVD of the 2016 Magnificent Seven, the theme song from the original plays over the "home screen" where you make scene selections, etc. So on the DVD...the original music controls the whole experience.
