Something I didn't get.

LUCAS is told that if he lies and takes the blame, the guys will pay him enough money to go to Yale. But why would such an important (or any) university accept to enlist someone who was expelled for making a sex tape?

reply

Sorry for the late reply -- I just saw this movie last night. I think the point was that his father was so powerful, he could get Luke in any university he wanted. Just like Em said early on about one of her frenemies (Heather, I think): that she was way too dumb to get into an Ivy League school but had gotten accepted anyway because of her family connections.

Being dumb is one thing. But if you're expelled for doing something illegal, it goes to your permament record. Also, if he can get into any U because of his father, then he doesn't need money. So why did the guys offered him?

reply

Well I think the offer was that he would get Luke into Yale (I think was his choice) AND take care of him financially -- which obviously would include paying his tuition. With his father immersed in a political scandal, no price was too high from them to pay to keep the son out of trouble.

And I may be wrong, but i don't think making the sex tape was illegal (the girl wasn't raped, nor was she under-age). It was just a violation of the academy's code of conduct.

reply

It was statutory rape. The girl was 15.

My husband works at a boarding school and we live on the campus. He serves on the disciplinary committee. Often when kids are "expelled" they are actually allowed to withdraw vs actually be expelled. They will have to find another school willing to accept them or return to public school and depending on what time of the year it is they will either have to make up classes or repeat the whole year somewhere else.

Interesting. Sort of like when you are asked to resign or retire from a job.
