I mean really. I don't think that Tony Shalhoub wants to speed all his time playing Arab Stereotypes. The whole reason you go for big name actors. Because someone might go see a movie with actors they like. But they might not go see a movie with "Who the F##k is This". Its called Marketing.
shareThe fact that there are so few minorities who are "big name actors" in America (a supposed "melting pot") is sorta the issue though, isn't it?
And let's face it, while there's occasionally a Will Smith or Denzel Washington, even most "big name" black actors aren't allowed to "carry" a movie. It's a huge joke that Samuel Jackson is in half the movies that get made... but do you think he has time for all those lesser parts if he's allowed to carry more movies? A guy like Don Cheadle is recognized as one of the best actors around, but has commented that he's not really offered very many movie roles? Um... what? THAT is the real issue here.
Now, I've SOMEWHAT defended the movie industry inasmuch as I've stated that they're a business that's fairly conservative when it comes to their bottom lines and the American audience has demonstrated time and time again that they prefer Caucasians.
But that's still pretty messed up, isn't it?
