The kiss at the end .... implausible

Having taken such great pains to present the decorum and 'properness' of the period, a young couple would never kiss in a public place, particularly outside of the Highest Court in the Land.

Good point. That reminds me of some classic films I've seen -- ones set in previous decades or centuries -- and there almost always seem to be officers around to scold people when they're kissing in public.

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.

While I agree, I'll also point out that it wasn't any random place or time but at the courthouse on the day of an important victory. Think of it as the equivalent of some celebration of the US Supreme Court ruling legalizing legalizing gay marriage. If some gay couples were getting frisky on the courthouse steps, they'd probably be tolerated.

Well, I also had the same thought, initially.
But then I also consider that Century was that of Casanova, of the Libertines...
Of course there were some intricate and rigid rules (as the film correctly and undoubtedly shows us) but I'm not that sure the society was so much bound in all its ways.
In those years the women in Venice went around with naked breasts, and though that wasn't indeed the case for London, I do not believe the XVIII was so strict as for public behavior as was the XIX.
Just to say, maybe is not that relevant, after all...

It was such a mild kiss, almost annoyingly so because of all the tension building up in the film. But as another poster said, the whole square was celebrating victory so nobody really noticed.

They didn't kiss; he just held her face in his hands.

Well I've just finished watching it and they DEFINITELY kissed!
