Cell Towers!!!

When someone ends up going missing, cops have the ability to see where the cell phone was bouncing off towers. They can actually get to close proximity. Plot hole tho.

Actually, I was wondering how they got cell service at all.

I can't get cell service in my house, much less out in the swamps. That's a definite goof.

If I had a dollar for every time I got distracted...Oh, look!! A puppy!!

Cell service can actually be good in flat areas like Louisiana, and cell towers are randomly spaced. OP's plot hole is correct. If the cops are trying to find someone, they can trace a smart phone's location very easily.

With the selling of TV white space movies will have to find some other cliche

Yes, but no one was looking for him. He had a bad rep and everyone assumes he's done a bunk.

It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it.

I thought the same thing. But decided that it was just one of those things that wasn't explained away. There should have been a scene where they made a point of turning off his cell phone so that they couldn't track it. and they may have filmed a scene like that, but it may have been edited out in the end 4 time.

Not to mention that they were posting on his Twitter from his computer, which could give an ISP location based on how they were connected (I'm assuming Wifi?) if Twitter would give out such information given the circumstances of a suspected and high-profile celebrity kidnapping. The villains weren't the brightest bulbs though. I'm sure if the movie had spanned more time, the villains using his cell phone/computer/accounts would have come back to bite them.
