Just like The Way Way Back

Come on, it's the same theme, same subject... same settings, same places...

That's bad :(

Not really. The Way, Way Back was more about the character finding his confidence and a mentor, as well as the dysfunction within his emerging family unit (relationship with his mom, relationship with the Steve Carell character). Plus, that film wasn't what I'd call happy. It was a bit depressing at times.

Ping Pong Summer is a throwback to typical '80s-era vacation comedies and underdog sports movies. The main character makes friends with another outcast his own age and then faces the town bully in a ping pong challenge, complete with a Mr. Miyagi-ish mentor. Besides, it was considerably funnier, especially if you were a child of the '80s.

I've never heard of that movie, so I can't really say.

reply

agreed. story lines aren't at all the same. it's like saying every coming of age flick is the same.

Now if we could just get a Pong movie!

they appear to be similar but after watching this i think the way way back is way way better than this movie.

i mean, this was okay, but it seemed a little slow and not as interesting as way way back.

sure, similar themes, you have the summertime vacation with the awkward main character kid but overall way way back nailed it.

reply

Agreed. The Way, Way back is a much better, and much better acted, film.

I would agree with the comparisons to The Way Way Back, I could not help but think of it while watching. This film just focused more on the kids and the acting all-around was immensely milder that TWWB which had some brilliant performances.

Interesting.

I loved the way way back and this film despite the Sumner theme.

What do you have against Summer?

I watched PPS a few months ago and TWWB a few days ago. And while they're clearly different tonally, it's hard to ignore the superficial similarities. As soon as TWWB began I thought of PPS.
