Was the point of this movie....

... to invoke sympathy for drunk drivers?

There's no other way to see it, otherwise you come up with the movie had no point at all.

The kid was dressed in all dark colors. He was also riding very close to the line separating lanes. The driver didn't hit him dead-on, but instead, clipped him, which propelled into the ground where he more than likely hit his head and sustained a fatal head injury.

The lead character should not have been behind the wheel. He had had an injury, had too much to drink and was fatigued.

I'm tired of people driving under the influence wanting to make it everybody else's fault but theirs. This whole "oops," "it was an accident" is sickening.

The kid was visible from the drivers point of view. There was no one on the road he could have missed that kid with no problem.

Did you actually watch the film and pay any attention at all, or just generally want a soapbox from which to dribble. The film isn't trying to ... i

The flashbacks reveal that Mal was mortified right from the start and wanted to confess to Carl at the site of the accident, but was persuaded from doing so. He becomes increasingly more depressed and despondant about his actions, as the narrative proceeds.

That is exactly what the movie among other themes, suggests to us, but if Mal hadn't been there, we wouldn't have had a movie. 🐭

The point was to just tell a story.
