Main issue with this show is that...

the two leads just go off on these fact-finding missions and find information that the local police should already have available or at least pushed harder to obtain. Some of these cases remained unsolved for decades!?! What the hell were they doing all this time?

Yes I thought all of this through and I do have no life. Thank you for reminding me.

This is true, especially the case last week where the person they eventually put in jail took the murdered womans car and credit cards after she was murdered; as well as being with her on the day she died..... AND stole money from her before she died.

The DA in that case would not bring the case to trial and I think having Kelly and Yolanda bring the case to national tv forces the DA to take action.

In order for them to work a case, they have to have the permission and cooperation of the local law enforcement, and I don't know about any cases they've had on the show, but I'm sure if there was a case that a cop on the force at the time of the murder might've been suspected as having some part in it, the rest of the department would have to wait till long after he retired or transferred before they'd okay them coming in to reopen it, if even then.

Their jobs. Crime doesn't stop just because you have an unsolved case. And like it or not, after a period of time with no new evidence it isn't going to be at the top of anyone's mind. I imagine police work is just like any other work, the more you do the better you get and there is always something new coming in. Small town detectives usually don't work many homicides and don't get enough practice or mentoring to be good at solving them and/or preparing a case for trial. Forensics is expensive and sometimes they just don't have the budget.

Exactly.

Well said. Another factor is that over time, people and circumstances change. I worked a case once where the girlfriend (now an ex) a number of years later came forward with information. By then, the statute of limitations had expired so it was moot. Most police departments don't have the resources to work their current casaes as well as randomly go over old cases in great detail.

RIP Ron Swanson. Writers created your awesomeness in S1 and killed it in S7

Resources.

Many of these police departments are in small towns with limited funds in which they can put towards a case. In the debut episode of this series they pointed that out. When the show comes to a town to look at a the cold cases they have more money, more resources, and access to newer technology than the a small town would have budgeted.
