I read once that in New York actors take jobs where they can take off at a moment's notice for a casting call. So they hold jobs as waiters, bartenders, cab drivers. Those jobs would probably also pay cash daily.

Harrison Ford was a carpenter for years as a day job. Henry Gibson (Laugh In, etc) said once he was a tie salesman at May Company Department Store between jobs. He said it was awkward once when someone he knew started talking to him on the job and then realized he was working and not a customer.

Once in the city where I live a woman reporter got a random telephone call from a "Republican campaign volunteer". She realized he had a trained speaking voice and pretended he sounded familiar. She asked if he had ever did any announcing or acting. He was flattered and admitted he was a stage actor between jobs and was paid to help man a phone bank.

She wrote about it later but left his name out of the story.

A lot of them are/were regulars on TV shows, so they have/had a regular income coming in. For example, Timothy Omundson is currently a regular on the TV show "Psych", and Stanley Kamel was (before his death) a regular on "Monk".

They also discussed some of the things they did earlier in their career for money.

thanks. i got the impression they all do other stuff most of the time. just was wondering.....

I heard the guy who played Norris's sidekick on Walker, TX Ranger worked at a Dallas area Dillard's as a shoe salesman during the first two seasons it was on the air. This show made that seem a whole lot more likely.

It's tough to make a living as an actor or any type of artist. I've been acting for two and half years and have only been in either a "blink and you'll miss me" extra in five movies or a handful of tv commercials. I do some telemarketing but mostly what I do is music gigs since I play piano and bass. I also audition for a lot of theater gigs. That's kept me afloat since I live in LA.

OP, did you watch the show? They actually talked about this. And then you can look at their imdb lists to see what they do now to pay the bills. All of these guys have reached a place where they get enough work to pay the bills without needing "steady jobs".

reply

i did. i don't recall specific details. i remember them mentioning early jobs and such, as in reminiscing. but not in the 'present' sense.

if you know, share?

I know a guy below these actors who is a bartender and MC. They say everyone who serves you in LA is an aspiring something. Maybe it's true!
