Takes Place In Washington DC....

Filmed in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). Not sure if the whole series is being filmed here or just episode 1 as has happened before with shows like "Jake 2.0".

I was expecting better with the cast that's in series. I like all the cast & that's reason I watched it. But seems it needs something. Didn't hold my attention. I really wanted to see more of Ryan hurst. Don't care for his character. Love him, Jon T. I'll watch a couple more times...maybe story line will grab my attention.

Pilot was filmed in Toronto
Series is filmed in Vancouver for now (might move to L.A. for season 2, since they won 1 of the California Tax Credit lottery spots)

reply

Even though I've only spent half a day in Vancouver, I still recognized the Vancouver Library in this week's episode. The locations don't look at all like DC; the buildings are too tall, for one thing.

reply

I don't even know why they bother, let's film a pilot in Toronto, then essentially fire the local crew and move to BC and hire a new crew.

Like I said in my OP, it's what they did with "Jake 2.0", and then they are going to do it again with a move to California!

There are plenty of reasons why productions move.

Usually its space, money or preference.
Toronto is still, despite its growing reputation, small as far as infrastructure goes. They dont have the resources that Vancouver has.
Vancouver has more skilled crews, and a LOT more of them, they have lots of studio space, and has the massive benefit of being in the same time zone as L.A. Which is ideal for cast, producers & directors who can get to & from L.A. in 2.5 hrs.

The ONLY reason anything films in Toronto at all is because of their obscene tax breaks. If Vancouver had their breaks, there would be 10 more shows being done in Vancouver & probably 5 less in Toronto.

FYI: Toronto "small" as far as infrastructure goes??? North America's third largest production centre with almost a million square feet of production space and Pinewood, N.A.'s largest purpose-built soundstage. Over 25,000 trained workers, 1300 projects in 2012, 87 feature films 2011-2012, $1.2 billion in 2012 including Pacific Rim, Carrie, Robocop, Total Recall, The Mortal Instruments, plus 20 TV series or movies filming this month alone.
I spoke to a producer on the beach here when they were filming the pilot (at the Leuty boathouse). He said the series would likely be shot in Van. The time zone is a big consideration, you're right. He loved filming in T.O. The move had nothing to do with lack of skilled crews unless T.O. was actually too busy to handle any more series. Even Vancouver's Krisen Kreuk is here filming.
Saying "the ONLY reason anything films in Toronto at all is because of their obscene tax breaks". Sorry, this is nonsense. Guillermo del Toro (Mimic, Pacific Rim, Mama, The Strain all here)films here all the time because he loves the city, crews, locations, FOOD! and studios. He says we have the best cinematheque in the world and one of the biggest film festivals. The tax breaks are vital to producers. This King and Maxwell producer told me they could count on the consistent tax credits in B.C. and Ontario. They want to know their credits, their costs. In the U.S. states keep changing their rules. The B.C. and Ontario are complicated, but fairly close, something like 35% plus for ON. and slightly less for B.C.(33%?) I can see American workers complaining about our tax breaks, but it's partly each state's fault for changing the rules every year. Tax breaks are standard for locales to attract business capital.
There's enough filming to go around. Let's work for Canadian production and not bicker between provinces. I love Vancouver and B.C. Beautiful. Enjoy!

Vancouver has a lot of quantity in filmmaking. Have their been any Oscar winning films made in Van? "Small" Toronto has had a few Oscar-winners and quality films (Network, Chicago, Good Will Hunting, Moonstruck, The Fly as well as The Paper Chase,Three Men and a Baby, Sea of Love, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Cinderella Man, A History of Violence, A Christmas Story, Fly Away Home Hairspray, Mean Girls, Silver Streak, X-Men, The Sweet Hereafter, The Santa Clause, Fever Pitch, etc.) Just sayin' Love B.C., hope to see some great films come out of B.C.

DC must have terrible taxes for television shows. Homeland is also set in DC but is filmed almost entirely in Charlotte, NC.

reply

there are probably a whole lot of restrictions about where you can and can't film, how long you can set up a shoot, setting up fake explosions, etc.

Living about 15 minutes from the DC line in Maryland. And having worked in DC on and off for years. The DC City Council would have bled the series' season budget dry long before the first landmark or location scene was staged, set up and executed.

Which is why you see so little of DC in this and other series. Those who run the city smell money and can come with very imaginative ways of taking it.

Mostly the same story for Manhattan. Which is a shame, since both are beautiful in their own rights. And have a distinct noir feel at night.

The same goes for most cities. That's why everything is filmed in Vancouver now, they actually have industry friendly legislation while even the classic film locations like in Cali have driven them away due to things like taxes and regulations. You gotta love the shortsighted self destructiveness of it, since they'd make far more money in the long haul if they opened up to film and television and shoots.

I was surprised at her first "location" - "The Smithsonian". The Smithsonian is a collection of 19 museums and the National Zoo - she told him almost nothing!

Living near and working in DC for several decades - it sure doesn't seem like DC. For one, cabs are almost never yellow, and they just moved to a uniform color - *red*.

But that's the least of it. I couldn't figure out WHERE they were when he kept referring to "Washington P.D.". You can't find a soul that will ever refer to the police in DC that way. I kept thinking "did they just move to Washington STATE?".

DC cops. District. No one refers to the police as "Washington cops".

Oh - and "Virginia P.D."? Please. Virginia police is state police only. The rest are county or independent city cops. Not the same.

I'm also a DC native and I don't find the DC references here to be that bad; better than a lot of 'set in DC' shows actually. I think for most shows set in a specific, identifiable location, they are only allowed to use actual terms, names, etc., when they are given permission; such as the names of the police departments. And as other posters have written, it's even more restrictive when it comes to the federal capital.

K&M does a pretty good job using wide shots of city landmarks and federal buildings, 'file' footage, within what's permitted. Some of the 'close up' shots of buildings and streets are kind of a stretch for DC neighborhoods, but many could actually be from some of the city and surrounding suburban areas. As for the taller buildings - taller than the Washington Monument - they can't be from the city itself, but I assume they are imitating office buildings that could be, and are plentiful, across the Potomac in Northern Virginia. As for 'the Smithsonian' comment, most non-Washingtonians and occasional tourists automatically reference The Castle when the name is brought up, but I understood her to be purposefully broad in her comment to Sean, knowing he wouldn't be able to nail down a 'Smithsonian' location.

I, at any rate, give them an A- for the attempts.

Hi, malkink:

It's always been "Metro" or "Metropolitan PD" to those who live in DC, VA and MD.

Also shows the laziness and ignorance of the show's writers, who do very little research in creating, developing and executing a series.

Don't even get me started on the "boat house". The stink coming off the Potomac would put even the strongest constitutions to the test. And win easily!

I just watched the episode where they went to the big bus/train station in DC - called "DC Central"

WTF? How hard is it to find out about Union Station? The only DC Central in DC is a soup kitchen.

reply

It was filmed in Toronto not the GTA. Big difference.

Understood.

The DC City Council would find countless ways of fleecing the series' budget dry. Long before the first day of filming anything substantive on location took place.

More's the pity. Because Washington, DC has huge potential for suspense and noir. Especially at night!
