Last episode in the garage, where he kept all his wife's belongings, son guessed he'd been moving pieces in and out of the house.

I didn't understand why he would be doing this now considering how long ago his wife died. I never got that explanation of his shady behavior.

I thought it was cocaine

After his wife died. He couldn't get over it. He really did love her deeply by the sound of it. That's why he turned to alcohol to numb the pain. He said that he was seeing a therapist. So he must have reached a point where he knoew what he was doing wasn't working for him and he decided to get help. Part of that was removing her things from the house. His emotions around the death of his wife were heightened because he was, in a way, letting her go. When the son tried to look in the bag he couldn't handle it because it it highlighted the fact that he was, in his mind, abandoning his wife by moving her things and on some level he felt deeply ashamed about it. That's what I think anyway. Cheers I hope this explains it somewhat :)

he was doing it now, I think, because he got the idea from therapy which he didn't begin until long after his wife died so like around the time of the show's events

At first I thought it might have been Hattie's body that he would take care of later. Then I thought (since it seemed heavy)it was something illegal like guns or drugs. A time or two he said he was going to work but later he mentioned that he hadn't worked in years, so I thought he was earning it illegally. If he was getting state benefits I don't think they would be enough to keep up the rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries and pub money.
Another poster thought it was some of Linus' mothers' things. Maybe so.

What was in the bag? A red herring, obviously.
