I'm still a little confused about the masks

Throughout the movie the characters appear to be wearing some kind of masks, and at one point part of Michael's mask even falls off. Does anyone know what that's supposed to mean? Or what the masks are supposed to symbolize in the first place? Also, Lisa's mask is a little broken. Is that supposed to mean anything?

To me, the masks means two things.

- Everybody are hiding their true emotions. People have been so indoctrinated by the corporate media to put on the "have a nice day" face in all situations.

But people can't keep up the pretense all of the time, so they are left with this fake persona.

- To Michael, people are all the same. There are no interesting personalities anymore. Everybody are indebted workers zombying around in a fake corporate world. He also sees himself in this way.

Michael is suffering from the the Fregoli delusion, hence the name of the hotel.

Thanks, chunkylefunga! This really helps explain what this movie was partially about. I did wonder about the name of the hotel when he checked in and later when he kind of chuckled the name on the phone when he was telling his ex-lover where he was staying.

Wiki has these symptoms listed for this neurosis. Quite a few of these relate to Michael:

delusions
visual memory deficit
deficit in self-monitoring
deficit in self-awareness
hallucinations
deficit in executive functions
deficit in cognitive flexibility
history of seizure activity
epileptogenic activity

Michael suffers from a delusion, and we are seeing the world from his POV.
