He bought a bunch of crap. He bought mansions,jets,island,cars,dinosaur bones,rare comics,etc. Who actually buys mansions right across from each other? Or mansions because they're haunted? He even has a castle.Why the hell buy 8 Rolls-Royce's when you're only going to be able to drive one at a time? Add up all that crap plus ongoing costs,taxes,etc and you have a money pit. Maintaining houses,jets and yachts would be the biggest costs. Houses never stop costing money,Jets need jet fuel and over $100k+ pilots,insurance,etc. I didn't know about boats but they need constant cleaning because all kinds of crap sticks to the sides,engine,etc without cleaning.

It's actually GOOD if rich people blow through their money. Hoarding is bad for the economy (Not saying that trickle down economics works just that it works better if rich people "waste" their money. Money is never lost, it just goes to someone else).
