Should have won the Golden Globe

for Best Miniseries as well as Riz Ahmed and John Turturro. Unfortunately, the show was too subtle for the HFP and its membeship is too stupid to appreciate its greatness.

Indeed. It was a robbery.

I never understand how those american awards work, or how much money it's thrown at the panel for a win campaign.

This show was mediocre at best.

Extract head from ass.

The Hollywood Foreign Press are notorious Anglophiles and genuflect to celebrity with relish. Not surprising that they wanted Hiddleston and Laurie up there, charming bastards both. And O.J. was a juggernaut, too salacious and topical to ignore.

The Night Of is pretty bleak. Like The Wire it's anathema to the whole notion of awards ceremonies, which are a celebration. The Night Of is not only extremely dark, it's also very opaque. This isn't a show about triumph or vindication or the perseverance of the soul. It doesn't yield any easy or comforting answers.

Great points, starsprent.

Then again, there's nothing wrong with a series about real life, not every series, or film, needs to have a comfortable ending, one tied up in a nice little bow. Those types of endings might be what the average viewer expects, yet that doesn't necessarily make a great series or film.

If the Hollywood Foreign Press are notorious Anglophiles, you have to wonder why Riz Ahmed wasn't awarded a GG, he is, after all, British. I guess his Queens NY accent was way too convincing?! 

You have to wonder, whatever happened to awarding performers for their craft and their art. Way too many awards are based on style over substance, basically hype. Other awards are given to 'movie stars' over performers who can actually act.

At least, TNO has brought Riz to the attention of US audiences and other markets which might not have been aware of his acting. Many viewers now know about Riz's amazing acting, he certainly won't be starving for work anytime soon.

An EMMY nod would be nice. Unfortunately, if Riz and John T are both nominated in the same category again, they will likely cancel each other out.

I agree, they certainly should reward shows like The Night Of. They certainly shouldn't shy away from the more oblique and harrowing stories. And they shouldn't swoon over an English accent as predictably as they do. I liked The Night Manager for example and Tom Hiddleston in it but find it incredible he won over Courtney B. Vance in particular, let alone John Turturro. There's a whiff of the bourgeoisie about their choices sometimes. Not all the time but it's there.

Couldn't agree more.
