Do they really need the voice-over?

It feels so heavy handed!
"Another girl would have said no but I blah blah" ... seriously? How much more exposure do we need on top of what's happening on the screen?
It's like they are worried it will be too hard for the moronic audience to put it all together without the character explaining why would marry an older guy with a complicated family life.
