vanilla extract a secret ingredient??

At what point did pure vanilla extract in any form become a secret ingredient? I just about fell off the couch when she revealed that as her "secret".

I have to agree! I don't think I have many cookie recipes - and I've made more than my share of cookies - that don't have vanilla in them! Bad choice for the "secret" ingredient!

reply

Yeah....that was pretty silly. They should have chosen anything other than that....except for flour or sugar ;)

That building is also a Starbucks?

Yes.

Is there a law?

reply

Thought that was really strange too. Vanilla, immitation or pure, is very common in cookies anyway.

A basic Christmas cookie is usually a sugar cookie. The basic sugar cookie recipe does not include vanilla. Adding an unexpected ingredient, even if it is common in other types a cookies, is still different enough to call it a secret ingredient. She was also 9 when she came up with the recipe!

True, it's not a drastically different ingredient, but it's actually vanilla bean, not vanilla extract, so that is a very different substance. Also, it was not commonly seen 25 years prior to the time the movie is set, so it would have been unusual.

At least it could have been a whole vanilla bean.
