This is awful

John Malkowitch has just delivered turky style acting!
Is that supposed to be an English accent?
Wow is my face red...

reply

Who cares what color your face is? This show is a hoot, and I hope it's a hit.

reply

OP..your face should be red with embarrassment because you don't know anything. This show is NOT awful and J.M is really good in it.

reply

Actually, the show really is awful and that accent is definitely BAD!

reply

i felt embarrassed for Malkovich while watching this. what a horrible show, though i'm sure he got a huge paycheck. his terrible English accent makes it sound like he gargling cocks in his mouth while speaking.

also, poor Julian Sands. he needs to make some more Warlock sequels.

~ I would like to encourage everyone to watch Curse 2: The Bite. It is made of awesomeness.

reply

Blackbeard (Edward Teach) was from Bristol...most people commenting on his accent probably haven't heard a Bristolian accent. Of course, John Malkovich sounds nothing like a Bristolian, but I'm just saying. The worst crime is that 'Blackbeard' in this show has a tiny white goatie. Blackbeard had a massive black beard...it's where his name came from. He also had long hair, and died at the age of 38. This show is tripe.

reply

This is explained in the first few minutes of the show. Julian Sands' character explains that he thought he had killed Blackbeard but has learned that he is still alive, and sends Lowe to find him and kill him. That's why he's older, and has no black beard nor black hair. This story begins later, after Blackbeard's real life story.

Have you ever heard of opinions? If you enjoyed this show good for you, I didn't like it but I'm not going to tell you you're wrong.

reply

Malkovitch is so painfully bad in this role. I could barely understand him or hear him half the time, too.

reply

Could not agree more. Terrible acting, plot and production, can't see it lasting more than one short season, at best.

reply

Yes cancellation is on the way for sure.

reply

Yep. Mindbogglingly awful. I was sitting there wondering if he actually read the script -- or maybe the script was butchered? There must be a logical explanation other than *he wanted to play a pirate* or *he needed the money*. Makes me kind of mad considering all the awesome pirate ideas that must be floating around out there. Mustn't there be?

reply

They should make a show around the movie Rounders where JM plays the Russian gangster character. Think it would be a winner. Maybe Ed Norton would reprise his role, hasn't been in much lately

reply

A series with the worst eastern euro accent ever, nice

reply

I was disappointed... The writers owe us an apology.

reply

I couldn't get past all the gore of the first few minutes. Shouldn't Blackbeard have a black beard? I guess he's old so it's gone gray, but I never would have pegged him as Blackbeard. The ships looked a bit too shiny and new...in other words, they looked fake. I don't know if I will try to watch the rest of the episode or not. Maybe it gets better...

reply

Blackbeard died at age 38.

reply

So he shouldn't look this old, then. Premature gray? :-) They have an actor that's over 60 playing him? No wonder this show seems fake.

reply

I just saw the post where it was said that he wasn't really dead and someone was looking for him when he got older. I didn't watch that far.

I quit watching too. It was not explained early on enough that this series actually starts years and years after Blackbeard's reported death at 38..... I now am told the series is a 'what if' he had not really died and surfaced much later and this other faction wanted him 'really dead'..... So they send a hit man... If this premise had been more apparent the script would undoubtedly made much more sense and I might not have dropped out. I have no problem with the accents since as someone mentioned...... who knows what other accents or island dialects might have influenced him after all those years.

reply

..And the fact that he was obviously in his sixties and hiding on an island didn't clue you in to anything?

reply

I actually missed the opening so I had no idea what transpired earlier.

reply

I actually wasn't familiar enough with the historical record of Blackbeard's life to balk at the age discrepancy but I went into it with the assumption that it wasn't meant to be historically accurate which is always a safe assumption with any historical fiction. Obviously though, I recognized that the Blackbeard depicted here didn't fit the description of the title and I assumed that his age, and the fact that he was hiding out on a secret island, somehow accounted for the discrepancy. I had to read the comments on IMDB to discover that the real Blackbeard died much younger. There were several problems with the storyline but accents and historical accuracy in a historical fiction are not what I generally require to enjoy a good piece of entertainment. You can hardly expect historical accuracy when you watch the Discovery channel, the History channel or read a book, I just don't get why people expect it in an obvious piece of fiction. I thought the characters and the acting was pretty entertaining which is what I generally expect out of a piece of fiction.

reply

Minor point, the ships should look in reasonably decent condition.

Keeping it tip-top was important for a few reasons, namely that it gave the crew something to keep them busy and it kept the ship in good working order, or ship-shape.

reply

Yes, first episode was very bad.

reply

By your standards, but 8 other billion people on the planet might disagree with you, or not. I thought the show is a hoot, what the other chap said. The writing is better then most other TV show's made today, J.M is a lovable eccentric character. What's not to like, I think the show will progress far.

reply

This was like his Eragon performance, I think he's just bad a sitting on throne like chairs!

This show is sadly hilarious it's so bad, I've just played assassins creed black flag so I could not wait for this show to be aired, I can't tell you how disappointed I was. Desperate for a master and commander like tv show, could be so dark and beautiful, unlike this drivel.

reply

Exactly. I was hoping for at least a pastiche of history. This was a pastiche of bad tv shows. I was half expecting something between Hornblower and Treasure island. Instead got somewhere between Xena warrior princess, and a hard place. At least the characters in Xena enjoyed the cheesy fondue plots. In this you can almost hear their souls leaving their bodies as they struggle to push out those inhumanly long expositional sentences. I actually heard them on the edge of breathlessness at certain points.
