Why would he stay?

Why would he stay? Why would anyone stay? Awkward weird vibe party, stupid game, slut kissing girl, guy giving cocaine away, man had murdered wife, Door with key that removes on the inside. I bought a house that had a front door lock like that, I replaced the lock with a normal one, never understood those dangerous locks.

reply

They all stayed because they're friends who enjoy each others' company, and in order to support their friends Eden and Will whom they hadn't seen in a while, and who were dealing with the loss of a child.

And did you finish the movie? That door lock was chosen for a specific reason. Even if you didn't watch until the end, you must have realize the door was supposed to be dangerous, since attention was drawn to it.

I watched till the end. I wasn't sure at first I would but I couldn't turn it off. I liked it.

reply

There's your answer. He stayed for the same reason you did.

A locked door on a home with ground floor windows wouldn't stop healthy adults from leaving.

No, but maybe the bars on the windows, that they clearly said the house now had, may have? ;-)

He didn't want to upset people, and he couldn't be sure he wasn't imagining that the situation was weird.

This is what I kept asking myself throughout the film. But I think for the main character, being in the home made him feel close to his dead son, as it brought back memories. But I definitely would have left after the guy admitted to killing his wife. That confession along with the creepy video of the woman dying would have been it for me.

reply

But would you really? Problem on this discussion is, people use wrong logic. We watching movie, we understand that all these creppy details will lead to very bad and bloody epilouge, we have intense music that makes us extra unconfortable, we have extra knowledge movie protagonist did not have. The thing is, we all had well- not similar probably- but unconfortable situations in life. Do we run when we see creppy child? Do we kill rape-looking neigbour? Would we run from all our friends if there is one extra person that is obviously creppy? No, no and no. As far as I am concerned, movie protagonist was quite smart, which is not saying other characters were stupid. Most of their reactios or acts were quite real - people just DON'T think this moment could be their last so they don't act like they are warned of something.

Anyway, this movie is literally great IMO, one of best horror thrillers I watched in ages.

I agree with you to a point, but with regards to movies in general. There are cues such as the music or even the name of the movie itself that serve as cues that something is "wrong" and someone is probably in danger. In real life, these cues would not exist, so we wouldn't leave or run. However, in this case, having a guest confess to killing his wife, then watching the video, combined with the intuition the main character was experiencing, I know that I would have left. I've actually been in situations where my intuition told me something creepy was going down, and I've exited the situation as soon as possible. It's possible that I could have also overreacted in those situations as well.

reply

I completely agree. I would've been out of there immediately after hearing that guy's story about killing his wife.

reply

Remember, though--the guy killed his wife by accident (yes, in an act of violence, but not one intended to be fatal).

The main character blames himself for his son's death, so he might not have been as creeped out or alienated as we are hearing that story.

And unlike the main character, Pruitt got to serve a formal penance (his jail time) that puts him on a kind of arc: (1) Responsible for death, (2) Paid the penalty, (3) Moving on with life.

The main character in the movie hasn't found a way to "pay" for his guilt, nor has he found a way to move on. If he acts as if Pruitt isn't worthy of a second chance, then what hope does he have?

I thought that there was so much creepy stuff going on, but in a weird way I understood why they all stayed. They wanted to support their friends. And even though things were emotionally intense, there were no indications of violence. Just a lot of pain.

I was screaming in my head "Get out of there!", but at the same time I totally got why they didn't. And the fact that it made sense to me why they were staying added more tension to the movie. These weren't just idiot kids following a strange sound out into the woods. They had complicated motivations and a well-established history with each other.

Also, imagine what it would have done to that main character if they had left and he found out later that he'd left his friends to die. The guy's guilt meter is already hovering at about a 9.5

reply

Because there would have been no movie if they (and many others) had left. That's the main reason. Everything else is just artistic license so the film could exist. I generally liked the movie but also got annoyed by some of the dumb behavior. You just have to get used to it with movies like this.

Terrible response - especially when there are clear, consistent in-universe reasons to explain it.

reply

I've read and recognised most of the reasons that the movie attempted to justify the reasons for his staying and I just didn't find them convincing. Just my personal opinion of course. But I still enjoyed the movie. I would have enjoyed a story more in which he did leave at some point and bumped into a bunch of other escapees from all the other parties which were indicated by the lanterns at the end.

reply

I agree 100%. After the death video everybody's fight or flight responses would be going off and I find it hard to believe will could be the only sane one.

As for your suggested turn of events, I don't know if that would've worked. Could you see it in a way that wouldn't mimic what we've already seen with The Purge?

reply

Yeeeaaa I can't connect with these types of movies at all. This movie woulda been a vine clip if it was me.

LOL

What is that thing you're using?.... It's technical.

reply

I agree. I would have left. Ive stayed at parties before where something odd has happened but where the whole group is just uncomfortable and makes it obvious they are uncomfortable Id leave.

reply

i already answered that, stop repeating the same question
