Didn't like the pilot much but the show has really grown on me

I've been a fan of Jim Jefferies stand up for years, he's had many great O&A radio appearances and I've gone to see a few of his stand up gigs but anyway when this show first aired I found the pilot slightly disappointing. I think it's just because I'd heard him tell that story before at least twice and it was funnier the way he told it than how the episode portrayed it.

The show has really grown on me since then with every episode though, I think it's really good although it's more than a little different from what I was expecting when I first heard he would have a sitcom project. It's a lot more clean and family friendly than I would have anticipated. I think the show works really well though and the acting and writing is good, hope this gets picked up for a couple seasons because I like where it's going and feel it's growing on me more and more as I watch it.

I do wonder what the show would be like though without obvious network censorship, because it feels like they're taming Jim down quite a bit at least from his stage persona. I also think they should probably have chosen a different episode as the pilot, it seemed more like a filler story you would put in the middle of a season instead of a pilot.

Standup comedy could never be translated directly to a TV show. It's always much raunchier and outrageous than what could be depicted on a scripted show. I'm surprised that you're surprised it's different.

Jim did say on Twitter that he didn't care for the first episode as much and the rest are reasonably better.

I totally agree. Worst pilot decision ever. What were they thinking? It was the most extreme and edgiest episode and the potential to turn off so many viewers.

I was watching it with my brother in law and he was like "what is this garbage?" because it seemed too low brow for him.

Also, the pilot must have been shot out of order or soemthing because in an interview DJ Qualls said this, and he was quite a downer in the first episode:
"AX: So were the LEGIT people able to allay your concerns about the action?

QUALLS: Yes. The writers have really found a way to work me into every scene. [Jim] is doing such terrible things, we need a little sweetness in the show. But as the character has evolved, I’m becoming more like Jim. It’s very interesting to be this guy who has such limitations, and to show him as a normal man, with the same wants and needs a man has. And they’ve worked him into a real person. I think he’s evolved with the show. I get to give a lot of s*** – we make enemies in a couple of episodes. It’s real male relationships."
