Why the bad ranking?

It's so funny seriously, what is wrong with people?

reply

They haven't made a movie like this in a while. This was more in the style of Airplane and went over people's heads. People nowadays prefer movies like Date Movie or Superhero Movie or Epic Movie etc etc etc. For further research on this topic, you should watch a documentary called Idiocracy about the future of the world we live in.

reply

Airplane is a masterpiece in comparison to this film, every film you listed (barring Idiocracy and Airplane) is also crappy, but this one is crappy in a different way.

This was satire done poorly, I only had a mild chuckle at a few scenes which is not enough to make a comedy worth it to me. A good 80% of the movie actually pissed me off, with its nudge nudge to the audience at how many silly tropes were on display.

Just because the films you listed make money doesn't mean that they are what everyone wants a comedy to be.

I also assume listing Idiocracy as a documentary is a joke...

Your opinion lost any weight it may have carried after you felt the need to express that there is the slightest possibility it wasn't a joke.

This is the problem. Jokes need to be very clearly stated as such to audiences today. People just don't have the capacity to recognize one for themselves.

reply

Are you saying he should have known that the complete stranger on the internet was making a joke?

The same internet that is filled with misinformation?

Are you suggesting that all the misinformation on the interweb is just sarcasm?

I think it's just safe to assume that the person was wrong. If the other person was just making a joke he should have had a little more context behind it.

reply

It's not okay, in that context, to think he was seriously listing Idiocracy as a documentary. People like that need their jokes to be extremely obvious to get them. This is why stupid sitcoms are so successful. They say, "This is a joke!" And then the audience laughs, "Ha ha ha! I like jokes!"

reply

Are you suggesting that all the misinformation (from strangers) on the interweb is just sarcasm?

(still asking, b/c this makes your argument severely flawed).

reply

No. Not all misinformation is just sarcasm. The Idiocracy comment clearly was. My argument about mainstream TV jokes being spoon fed to the point of dependency is sound and unbreakable. 

reply

It definitely took some inspiration from the likes of Airplane, Naked Gun and Hotshots; parodying, self-referential, irreverent and machine-gun-style joke telling. Some jokes didn't land, but overall it deserves higher than its current ranking, and the level of scorn from some posters isn't really justifiable. It was slightly different than that particular comedy gang's usual shtick and experimentation and new ideas should be encouraged in a world of constant sequels, remakes, and adaptations.

Highlights for me:

The frame narrative was a great device in this instance and was used to good effect. Broke the movie up, moved the plot along, made for some great commentary.

Amy Poehler was fantastic, really showed why she is the funniest woman in Hollywood.

Good to see Max Greenfield has seemingly been accepted into that dominating crew of comedy actors. Seems like both he and New Girl co-star Jake Johnson are doing well in the industry lately, and deservedly so!

I'd give it around 6.5-7.

reply

Ranking is such a horrible word.

reply

I laughed my ass off, was surprised to see it is 5.5 right now. It was like a low-budget live action Simpsons mixed with Airplane.

So glad I watched it. Made me want to watch The Simpsons season 4 right now.

Yes the IMDb score seems to be plummeting over time.. I would guess folks just don't really 'get' it but it seems by comments here that people didn't find it funny? Which is hard for me to believe- I loved the actors (particularly the leads), the type of humor, the satire of romcoms and romance in general- I've watched it a few times now and laugh every time throughout. I've found few modern comedies I can rewatch and still find new things to laugh at, even if it's the throwaway lines ("I love Saturdays"). For a modern comedy, I gave it a solid 8/10

reply

the first 45 minutes of the movie were not funny so why should I have stayed around for the last 45

reply

Possibly you would have spontaneously developed a sense of humor in the second half?

reply

I totally "got it", I just didn't think it was funny. Just because they use good actors that people like doesn't make this any better than Date Movie, any of the Scary Movies, etc. I knew what this was about and the style in which it was made before I watched it, and decided to watch it because I like all of the actors in it. That was still not enough to save it for me. I know a lot of people really didn't know what to expect but that isn't the only reason people didn't like it.

reply

I wish instead of saying people didn't "get it" they would just say they didn't enjoy it. You can get something and still dislike it. I had high expectations for this. Love Rudd and Poehler (sp?). And I had a friend gush about this film (a friend that is usually spot on with my tastes). Overall I thought this was just "okay".

And I did "get it". There was no real secret here. We all knew what it was trying to do going in. And while I admired the effort, I didn't love this film.

I just get sick of people thinking that b/c you didn't enjoy something that you were too stupid to enjoy it. That's hardly the case with any film.

People always resort to that deduction on this site. It's a way to arrogantly disregard anyone who doesn't agree with them about a film they liked. "Oh you must not have understood it. That's the only reason you didn't like it".

I can't believe people are saying that about this film. It isn't the least bit complex.

reply

nothing funny about this movie what's wrong with you

I gave this movie a 5. And I'm willing to bet that I have more comedy awards than the OP. So saying that anyone that did not love this movie "didn't get it" (or doesn't get comedy) is as laughable as it is inaccurate.

Can't you just say "I really enjoyed this film and I don't need anyone else's opinion to validate my own."?

reply

So, awards=quality in your mind? Do you think that Goodfellas is an inferior movie to Dances with Wolves, then?

Well, yeah.

reply

What is a comedy award?

reply

Pity claps at his local comedy club.

reply

I'm sorry that I won awards. I didn't realize it would offend people who never try anything creative.

reply

What is a comedy award?

Something you'll never have to worry about.

I love the irony of someone saying people shouldn't need validation from others, as they casually "throw out" that they have won unspecified "comedy awards".

Quite hilarious, but not the kind of comedy you're intending I'm afraid.

reply

No wonder you found it funny, you completely missed my point. Probably b/c of being butt hurt about not ever winning anything. My point is that I don't need some nerd (that's never won anything) telling me I don't have a sense of humor b/c I didn't like something he did.

Did it really bother all you virgins that I won a few awards? You're the 3rd person to have a problem with it.

reply

You're an anonymous person on the internet claiming to be an authority on comedy and are using claims of unspecified awards to back up your boasts, rather than anything resembling wit or argument. We haven't seen any evidence that you can analyse why one thing is funnier than another. You haven't even said anything funny. Some awards they must be.

reply

I actually came here surprised it was rated this high. I get that it was supposed to be a cheesy satire, but it just wasn't funny. And I'm usually a fan of most of the actors in the movie but the writing in this was just so bad it fell flat for me. I give it a 4.

Now, a question of etiquette - as I pass, do I give you the ass, or the crotch?

reply

I agree. I don't understand it.

I would also like to relay that I hate everybody that would give it less than an 8 out of 10. And I want them to die and go to hell.

reply

Thank you! Dying and going to hell at the very least!
